Ugh I hate making these decisions.
The old girl looks as if she has had a full life. This is a tough part of living with a long time pet friend. The love will last. I feel for you. Be strong.

My JRT is pushing 18 years and sadly she suffers from canine cognitive disorder. She no longer wants to play, sleeps an inordinate amount of time, wanders the house, and appears to be lost. However, she has been a faithful loving companion and we intend to let her live as long as possible. Many times she will lie sleeping directly in a walkway, and Granny refuses to disturb her. So she will maneuver her walker around and even over rather than waking Daisy.

For many years I heard people says that each year of a dog's life was comparable to 7 of ours. That never made a lot of sense and now there are many different formulas for computing a dog's age based on physical development. I found one site that even takes into consideration the dog's breed. http://www.pedigree.com/All-Things-Dog/dog-age-calculator/default.aspx Based on the information gleaned from that site a 12 year old Labrador Retriever has reached the same physical age as 18 year old Jack Russell Terrier.

It is so hard when a dog gets like that in their late elder years. Hopefully your sweet Daisy is not in pain from anything, and just has a little doggy dementia?

I just plugged in Nicky's doggy age into the calculator and got an age of 64. He is a purebred Beagle (even has an AKC registration). I believe that age, he has a lot of life left. He plays, gallops around in the snow, and goes for walks with glee. Interestingly enough, he bonded closely to me now. The first few days he was here, my Dad was his #1. But now if given the choice, he goes to bed with me, stays with me when I'm in the house, and am the first he brings a toy to. He also whimpers at the door a little if I have to leave the house without him (he settles back in quickly, I'm told).

Thanks for the kind words... I have the vet coming out on Sunday, but I may need to have her come tonight if she can.

They don't have corsos on the list, bull mastiff is close but no info on that breed selected.. so I just picked mastiff.. and it said she would be 96. Most of us humans would be lucky to live that long!

I did the list thing as well. First time I plugged 14 years and Samoyed and it said to try a different age and breed. Retried with 13 years and got a result of 96 for Majick the wonder dog. That seems about right, he is going deaf and his hind legs don't work so well any more. He has good days and bad days but he is still the best dog that I have ever shared time with.

I've always tried to avoid doctors until recently when I acquiesced to family pressure to have everything checked out. It's almost like I wasn't sick until the doctors told me I was. Now four doctors later I feel much worse than when I started. Since having this minor surgery to my elbow if I were to figure my age in dog years I would probably be a Labrador and not a JRT.

After hearing so many things about people having health issues I suppose that I am lucky that I can't afford any medical "care". The last time I saw a doctor was in 1998.

Prayers for daisy and sillys dog.. so hard having aging pets.

I have a old cat, he is getting skinnier and skinnier, pukes, pees alot.. so i am guessing kidney failure and other old age complications. he is still eating and drinking and getting around good.. but saddens me to think that we may not have him around someday in the near future.. i would be surprised if he make it a yr.. he is almost 18 so i know he is pushing a good old age.. we have had his since he was around 2yrs old.. our first family cat. I told my hubby, that when he starts withdrawing from the family that is when we take action.. because that is what they do when they are in that much discomfort.. right now he seems good.. still acting normal well as normal as he could be.. he is a goofy quirky cat..
