Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I am all bloody. Not of my own blood, but of the rooster Salt.

We put him out in the coop of the lady who was going to take him. King Henry was already in and comfortable. Salt quarreled with a RIR rooster. He won but, one blow got him good. He was blinded by blood from his comb. So I picked him and he's now coming back with us. The bleeding isn't as bad now. Blood seems to be in his nostrils. Eyes seem clear now.

When I went back to the her coop, i saw a TRAIL of blood.

We are also coming back with a hen who is practically naked. From molt and a silke who repeatedly mounted her. And I thought we were down sizing the flock

Hi everyone,
Been extremely busy. Everything was pretty great until yesterday. Not a happy camper right now$#$#%^&%%^. Anyway looking for 4-6 laying hens(ee's or brown layers) and 2 Muscovy ducks. If anyone wants to part with any in SE Michigan?
Would be awhile, but if my muscovies have babies in the spring, your welcome to have some. The male (Thunder) is jet black with dark green tinges in the sun and the female (Lightening) is white with some streaks of grey in her, both so friendly and stick together, hoping she's a good mom.

Has anyone tried the frost free cream they put on cows udders? It seems like it would keep the roosters combs from freezing as well. I think I've seen it at TSC.

I've been using the bag balm and my rooster still has a lil black starting to show on the tips of his comb.

Just been a rough winter so far.
Me and DH got 15lbs of smoked jalapeno n cheddar kielbasa done over the last 3 days. So time consuming, but so worth it. Used the sheep casings this time and they worked out great, only split twice.
Hope everyone has a great and safe Christmas, be careful driving and stay in if you can for now.

Hello from Northwest Ohio! So sorry about the pets that are having troubles. Hope all goes well for them. It's so hard when pets get sick.
To all those who are "downsizing" their flocks, isn't that called "chicken math?"

I love chicken math! They're all so cute it's soooo hard to decide which ones you can't live without!

Update on the rest of my flock. I still have 5 left after dog attack. They finished the round of penicillin injections. Scabs are forming. They are eating, not as much as I'd like, but they are all eating. They're pretty content yet to stay in the coop. with the warmer temps I was able to shut off one of the heat lamps. And tonight I opened an extra window to start getting them used to colder temps again, before the temps drop too far. I can walk in the coop now and they don't run away afraid but they do walk away afraid yet. I left a message for the dog warden on Tuesday, and still haven't gotten a reply. I guess I'll try again on Monday.

I don't think I'll have time before Christmas to post, so for those celebrating do have a very Merry Christmas!

Oh my gosh, it's terrible out there! 4am and we just got our power back (really lucky we got it back so soon and hope it stays on!). It had been out since dinner time and they weren't giving a time estimate. There have been bright flashes all over the horizon from electric lines and transformers. The ice is knocking down branches everywhere. Every couple of hours we get a loud "BOOM", shaking our house. Not sure what it is but I suspect branches falling on our line. Our road is littered with debris, seen a couple of cars dodging/it's a skating rink so BE CAREFUL! Scary stuff.

Power company working on the transformer across the road at 3:30am

Need some sleep @_@
