Merry Christmas to all. Getting ready to head to mom's for XMAS Eve.
looks very yummy, I forgot to make pecan sandys, --those look so good.

As all you hunters know, it's been pretty slim pickings
Stay warm and enjoy the rest of your Christmas Eve.
I think Opa said that goes with frost bite, I would bring him into a warmer area if you can. any chance of adding a little heat to the coop?

The pie shaped w/drizzled chocolate are Cherry Pecan Shortbread...OMG, so good I have to make a triple recipe cuz I can (& do) eat one whole circle (12 slices) in 2 days. In fact I just had one + a frosted sugar cookie w/my coffee. Thank goodness sweets are calorie free from Thanksgiving thru New Years ;)

Merry Christmas to everybody- my truck broke down as I left yesterday, so i didn't get to go to my family's, but me daughter had room for 2 and stopped by and took her 2 lil (way bigger than her, lol) brothers and they all had a great time. Off to the shop tomorrow morning, but will enjoy a peaceful day today. The ice still looks beautiful out, but this bitter cold is awful.

taprock, FIrst off, Merry christmas! Frostbite and any signs of it such as swelling or black spots can be very severe. Exposure of certain body parts such as combs, waddles, and appendages uncovered and exposed can wreak havoc in animals as well as humans. You really need to take note when the outside temperature or your inside coop temperature reaches the freezing point. Blood flow and circulation become restricted to the colder exposed body parts. The elements of nature can be brutal if we dont protect ourselves against them. Unfortunately some body parts of a chicken aren't covered with nice soft downy feathers. Noticing swelling was a good sign your chicken was in harms way.Chances are you would have had a lot worse damage to the bird had to left it out there. Roosters or cockerels seem to pay the price greater than hens because of their sometimes large combs and waddles. Their legs are sometimes longer as well and more exposed. This is a good time to ask yourself how you can either tighten up or warm up your coop. I dont generally use heat unless its an extreme case like yours. Adequate ventilation to remove moisture, Maybe insulation and a few other things can help. Rest assured, you are not alone on this issue.

So sorry about your truck, that really stinks!

frostbite is the main reason I am switching to Chanteclairs and Americaunas. small combs and waddles. The only time I had a frost bite issue was when I sprayed bleach on the walls before a cold spell and it didn't dry properly. rooster had his head in the corner and some points got FB Your temps are very extreme, we haven't gotten that cold,I don't think,
You have a trailer coop right? maybe you should open a window or two just a little for more ventilation, We get cold and close everything up tight, which is not always good for our birds
