Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

All i wanted was a small grinder sausage stuffer, and this is what i end up with for Christmas.. You can tell i didn't pick this out.. i think my hubby went a little overboard.. grinds pretty fast though..

I feel bad for everyone without power or water, praying you get power and a shower soon..
you'll be so much happier with that one.. looks hefty and should make short work of what ever your doing! If I had one of those, I'd process my own deer... all I have now is an antique hand crank.
I would have hated it without power all this time.. I feel for you guys without it!. We had a house full for the holidays and still kick ourselves for not adding an alternative heating method. Some day we'll install something. But mean while there would be no heat or ability to cook or get water. Generator was leaking fuel and unusable until today, DH finally found the part we needed.

Can those of you who lost food make a claim on your home insurance?
DH just called and told me he installed a light/switch and outlet down in the goat shed!

Now we can actually see and put a heated water bucket in for the goats and heat lamp if necessary for the pending arrival in March/April! Hopefully he installed like I asked, and where the goats can't reach the wires.
DH did what he always does.. tells me we don't have money for gifts for each other... and then he gives me a nice gift. Though I love the Harley jacket he got me... and I needed one... I would have liked the warm fuzzy of getting him something. Brat!

I'm one of the unlucky on day 6 of no power. And yes I'm on a well so no water. I melted snow for chicken water and toilets. DTE has put my area as having power twice this week. We're in the forgotten zone. Almost out of firewood and my sanity is being greatly tested! Not sure if we'll have power by the new year at this rate. On the outage map there are 1000 without power that had a completed work order. Idiots!
My chickens aren't used to waiting for water. They're laying well though. I have lots of eggs and no way to cook them.
If you aren't too far from Millington, I have a little dried firewood and 2 huge ash trees that I had cut down a few weeks ago you can have if you can carry. Hope you get power soon.

My BLRW isn't walking today. Last night when I was checking on everyone I noticed he wasn't in the coop (and it was dark) and found him in the run, under the ramp. I picked him up and put him IN the coop figuring he just was out and it got too dark for him to navigate the ramp or something. Well today I found him hiding in the space between the studs NEXT TO THE DOOR in the coop. As in, he moved a whopping foot from where I set him last night. And he can't/won't stand up. I checked him over for bugs and injuries and can't see anything. I shut him in a nest box (because the pullets are nosey and won't leave him alone) and gave him a dish of mash, which he absolutely attacked.

Anyone have any ideas? I don't have a place to isolate him OUT of the coops. Bringing him in the house isn't an option. This is the only bird that I've really spent serious money on (he's from PeckyBeaky in PA.....they have really pretty birds) and if I don't even get him through to his first breeding season I'm going to be really sad.

love the harley jacket, very nice..

I have to admit i was kinda mad when the big grinder came in the mail.. didnt want something that expensive and maybe only use it a couple times a year.. to me that is not practical, but so far we have used it twice in the past week, and plan on using it alot more. plus its powerful and quiet... The more i use it the more i am starting to enjoy it. after we got done grinding today my dd was helping and enjoying also.. i told my son go get the cat.. lol.. hmmm they didnt think that was funny.. i did.. i know sick humour..sorry hope i didnt offend anyone.. but for the record i dont eat cat..

Awe glad i sure hope it isnt serious, is he walking yet. doesnt sound good. so sorry

that's funny!!!

Thanks for all of the offers to help us out!!! I sure hope I don't lose my mind from this. I don't want to be told by DTE 'thanks for your patience' ever again!!

If you can't put him in the house or garage, your only option is to cage him separately in the coop with a light for heat. If he's not moving around he will not be able to keep himself warm either. Even a 100 watt bulb (if the cage less than 1.5' deep, check the temperature under it and lower the wattage if necessary) set on top of his cage and secured should work if you put a sweater on him and give him enough room to get away from the bulb. I find this works really well, you take the guard off the brooder lamp and use the holes to tie wrap the brood lamp to the top of the wire cage. I put a tray on top of at least part of the cage so everyone can't roost on it and poop on him. It also helps to keep the warmth in. Good luck with your rooster.
I'm losing 2-3 trees daily, all near/in my driveway or near/on one of my coops. So far no damage but its just a matter of time before I run out of trees. I tried shaking the ice & snow off but it just breaks the limbs, I haven't looked away from the house & coops so probably have a bunch more trees down, and i don't have a wood stove,,, yet. Is it almost spring, yet?

Sure would have liked to gone hunting tonight. But since both Hope and Granny would be chewing on me for going alone. So coward that, I am I acquiesced to their request. Plus since I don't think I could drag a deer out of the woods I decided that tomorrow, with David, will have to suffice.

Birds are laying well and they are fairing the winter well. At least that's what I'm being told. My incision still hasn't healed so the family won't let me go to the chicken coop. The last surgery was on November 15th so you think it would have had sufficient time. The sad thing about this entire fiasco is the before the surgery I had no pain in my arm. Now two surgeries later the pain never quits and Lord help me if I bump it.

Still given the fatality rate that comes with this type of infection, I am extremely glad to be alive.

I have a friend in Clarkston, I talked to this AM, she is with out power yet also

Hope your power is on now

very nice grinder, you can do a deer in no time at all, venison burger is great.
Now that Christmas is over, I'm ready for the snow to melt. I do love a white Christmas!!!
s comb, and top of his head/back of his neck. I'm not up there to put utter cream or anything on it. The coop is cleaned daily, and its well ventilated. The waterer is a 5 gal bucket kept warm with a heat lamp and has about 6 nipples attached to it. So he's not getting his comb wet by putting his head in water...
Any other ideas? The chickens are up north where its very cold.
is he getting picked on by other roster or hens? I have one today witha bloody head and feathers missing I think the roosters are fighting
