Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

As much as I would like to stay indoors today, I must face the snow and the drivers who either don't understand the need to drive according to road conditions or they are just idiots. Either way I must get out and about before much longer. I have an appointment with the orthopedic surgeon. Hopefully he can provide me with some answers as to why this elbow is still causing me problems. Better still would be something to correct the problem.

Hope had to go to her son's house to babysit the twins and their older sister. I was starting to get a little concerned when she hadn't called by the time I thought she should have arrived by. Fortunately she called and had arrived without much difficulty.

Today is definitely going to be a day to check for eggs often. With the temperatures we are experiencing, frozen eggs is almost a given.

There's hardly anyone left on that I started with. Don't know why I keep coming on. lol They're still around and have chickens, just don't come on BYC anymore. I have lunch with 5 of the women once in awhile. We still talk chicken. lol
I started back when Olive, RIRjen, Fifelakelooper, Momtothemall, Mish, Juise, HH, and quite a few others. It seemed like you couldn't get a word in edgewise with all the chatter. I noticed lately even Nova has subsided. I can say with certainty that as long as there's a BYC I'll be around. Winter is my time to talk. After spring starts it's too busy!

Today I'm calling a gal to see if she wants a 4 month old Blue Copper Maran Roo. If not it's here for the taking. Very beautiful just no room since it was supposed to be a hen. So much for 100% guaranteed hen sexed chicks, ha ha! I won't mention the source since a few people on BYC buy there. Plus the source is really nice - just human - and not perfect.

Good luck today Sam!

I will never bother with venison ribs. Way too much effort for what you get.. and as much as I like venison, I can't stand venison fat...

I only got one deer as well this year. Very dry and discouraging year. Think I'll have to take my bow back up to increase my chances.

We had a good but subdued new year..went with some friends to a nice restaurant in Jackson mi, one fifty one... nice place but a bit pricey. They were busy, and it was about a 2 hr meal... luckily we were not in a hurry. We went home, buttoned everyone up for the night and then went with the same friends to their neighbors house for a party... it was pretty subdued but fun. The following day we made it as lazy as possible. Watched TV, played some pool, enjoyed the hot tub... it's all gonna be work from here on out!!

Hope everyone has a happy, healthy and prosperous new year!

I sure wish I would have a good night's sleep. I am constantly waking up and usually around 4am I'm up. I think maybe it is an old man reaction to the knowledge that the big nap is coming so let's not waste any time sleeping now when we will be doing nothing but sooner than we'd like.

I just read an article the other day that named several successful business and political people (Margaret Thatcher being the only name I can remember now). They all were up before 5 and started their days. The article was stressing the point that rising early helps you with planning and accomplishing more.

My hen who was making noise breathing is still fine. I checked her yesterday morning and she is totally back to normal. I am very puzzled and thinking she was faking to get in out of the cold. She is in the basement for a few more days at least because it is too cold to toss her back out. We also made it to 3 degrees yesterday. However took a trip into Petoskey which was a warm spot at 6. It is -6 now but that is an improvement over -17 the night before. It seems this month the beautiful sunny days have also all been the ones where the temps are single digits.

Dh has determined it is too cold to work in the garage and is in the process of moving his metal lathe to the basement. His room is unfinished in the basement and he decided that he should drywall it before moving the lathe in. My parents also gave us a shower stall for our unfinished bathroom in the basement. So DH is taking the rest of the week off to work down there. I love the fact the basement is finally getting some attention, it frustrates me that it took wanting to move his tools to motivate him.

And more on how I hate the weather.... today at work my project is to make up a winter reading list for all ages to hand out in two weeks for Winterfest as we will be a warming station. All cold and snowy books as if anyone needs to read about it...

I don't remember hating winter this much this soon in past years.

I guess that explains why I have failed. I sleep too late, don't make plans and when I do do stuff, my philosophy is that if it doesn't get done today it will be there for me tomorrow.

I've been on for almost 7 years. So you can imagine how many people I've seen come and go. It was more fun before everything split up... like into the separate state threads, etc. In the beginning it was just one big forum and we sure did have fun messing with each other. Even the MI thread was lots of fun when we first started. Getting to know each other and sharing our lives. Now, it seems the cliques develope and the others get forgotten and ignored. Guess that just happens and people don't even realize that it's happening. But, I can tell you, that's the number one complaint I hear from those that have disappeared. I'm Geman and stubborn, so I guess it's my hope that things will get back to what it was. I'm not saying anyone is mean or rude, even tho, there has been a few of those on this thread.. but there are certain people that can say hi and get tens of responses. Other people can post a heartfelt post and get completely ignored. Why is that? What makes one person so important and others not worthy of a response?? We are all here to share our lives and post pics of our chickens and other critters. We're here to have fun... But for some, that has stopped and that's why so many are no longer here..

Wow, chickflick, I appreciate you bringing that to our attention! I have not been on BYC long (less then a year) and I'm definitely more of a reader then a poster, but I will try to be more impartial. I tend to only reply when its something pertaining to me. The deer harvesting experience was very educational. I also enjoy hearing about the illnesses and attacks. I wish our chickens were never ill or attacked, but I do like hearing how the issues are resolved and how to apply that to my own flock.
I do enjoy reading posts from everyone on here! ;-)

I feel exactly the same way

I'm a long-time member of another forum that underwent a similar change when the popularity of the subject of that forum caught on to the more mainstream crowd (kind of like it seems chickens has). Yes, the sense of community definitely changes, but when the people who originally developed and fostered that sense of community give up and leave we are all worse off for it.

I will say though, that instead of lamenting the fun that "used to be" help us newbs out and let's have new fun!
