Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

what I see with the changes is this: they have now changed the wording from all being described as "livestock production facilities" (50 units or more) and added "livestock facilities" (less than 50 units) Most of us are livestock facilities. They are doing two things... limiting the expansion of commercial livestock production facilities near residential areas and now putting the power of determining who can have "livestock facilities" near residential areas in the hands of your local governing bodies, depending on 1 of the 4 categories you fall in. Unfortunately, I fall in number 3 category. So at any time, even though I am zoned AG and have over 10 acres because I live near residential area...
All someone has to do is ***** about a rooster crowing and they could shut me down. I basically am at the whim of the local magistrate. Worse yet for us... if the guy next to us puts in that subdivision.. we would probably no longer be zoned AG and will not be allowed to have anything but horses. If this happens, we WILL be moving!

Category 3 Sites: Sites generally not acceptable for new and expanding livestock
production facilities.

New and expanding livestock production facilities should not be constructed in areas
where local zoning does not allow for agriculture uses
. Category 3 sites may be zoned for agriculture but generally not suitable for livestock production facilities. They may be suitable for livestock facilities.

3. Proximity to Residential zones Agricultural zoned areas in close proximity to residential areas Areas zoned primarily for residential use will generally have housing at a density that necessitates setback distances for livestock production facilities to prevent conflicts. New livestock production facilities shall not be constructed within 1,500 feet of areas zoned for residential use where agriculture uses are excluded. Existing livestock production facilities 12 may be expanded within 1,500 feet of areas zoned for residential use with approval from the local unit of government.

I am going to try to attend the meeting

oh.. and one other comment on the proposed changes... wording something to affect that residential areas are NOT suited for livestock facilities.. which means to me, that even towns that allow BYC's are now being told by the state, it's not allowed. Second description in #4 - they wrote this for you Raz!!

Category 4 Sites: Sites not acceptable for New and Expanding Livestock Facilities and Livestock Production Facilities.

Category 4 Sites are sites that are exclusively zoned for residential use and are not acceptable locations for livestock facilities regardless of number. Confining livestock in these locations does not conform to the Siting GAAMP

I won't be able to make the GAAMPs meeting, but I did give the email address provided a piece of my mind! Hopefully enough people will show up who can represent the common Michigander to them and prevent this stupidity.

unfortunately it is normal, BIG. corp have been trying to get rid of the small guy for decades, The real problem is we don't see it till it hits us in the face

Likethe jobs going over seas, I was told 30 yrs ago this is good, now the factory workers will get an education and a better job, What they failed to see was every one can not get a collage education for many diff. reasons AND now all the ceo's, managers, white collor, collage educated people have no one to over see, manage, ect. loss of jobs at the lowwer level means loss of jobs at the higher level. And they still won't admitt most of our problems, unemployment, people on welfare, people with out ins. is due to BIG CORP GREED and loss of jobs

The GAAMPs are only confusing to the point that they were supposed to be based on sound, scientific principle and research. They were structured to be reviewed each year so that the science would be fresh and accurate. That is all good as the facts can be verified, quantified and are objective in scope.

The proposed changes are now based on agendas of big business, big ag, insurance lobby, the league of townships and a host of other special interest groups. Not one of the proposed changes has an iota of scientific merit. The changes are subjective, arbitrary and capricious. You could get the same results with a Ouija board or magic 8-ball.

If you want to see how this will affect you personally, go to your township or city and ask for a zoning map (some are available on-line). Check to see how you are zoned. Your designation may even have changed without notification.

they're also creating a buffer around res areas, so like my situation,, though I am zoned AG, I may not be able to have any livestock... at the other end of the spectrum.. they are not buffering AG areas from residential expansion... wouldn't want to lose the extra tax base now would we?

I measured out.. 1500 ft space is equal to more than the distance across a 40 acre sq parcel.

That is precisely why the original RTF was enacted in 1977. Rural areas like South Lyon, Howell, and other areas had a housing boom as city folk moved to the country and then didn't like living next to a working farm. They "ordinanced" the farmer off of his land. So state law was enacted to protect the family farm. Then in the late 80's and 90's, the big ag business bought up family farms, expanded the CAFOs and then bought and paid for a new state law to address their interests. It gripes them that us little guys were using "their" law.

I hope you can attend the meeting. Maybe we can carpool from A2.

That's why I'm raising the alarm. MDARD only released the notice the other day and it was on the QT. If they really had any intent of hearing public comments then they would allow more than 2 weeks and would have meetings across the state in both peninsulas.

Someone said something about "processing-school" stuff. This is the video I liked and used when I was processing the injured birds after the dog attack. He kind of blathers on, but the technique is what I was after.
