Motor City greetings! My boyfriend and I live one mile north of Detroit, and are first time backyard chickeneers. We are almost done building our coop, our version of the Wichita Cabin Coop. We started building in October, and will have it mostly completed this afternoon when we install the hen house door. The process has been enlightening, and a ton of fun.

We plan on getting our chicks in late February/March from Cedar Creek Hatchery in Twin Lakes. The owner mostly does mail order, but has allowed us to pick up our small order (three chicks) in person. Our hopes are to get a Black Lava, a Black French Copper Maran and a Bluebell Superlayer.

Welcome to BYC!!! I was just showing my DH the wichita cabin coop and asking him if he could do one for me! I especially liked the updated idea of stapling clear plastic to removable lattice to keep out the wind and snow in the winter. It is always hard to keep plastics from blowing away, and after working that hard on a pretty coop the last thing you want to do is put staple holes all over! You did great on yours, VERY nice.

Thanks so much. I really love to look and design of the Wichita Cabin Coop. It's going to be perfect for what we want. The whole thing probably could have been finished in four weekends of work, but we took our time on account of weather. We picked a helluva time to start building a coop! We started in mid-October. I, too, love the idea of the plastic and lattice. It's genius, really. Good luck with your coop construction!

Our third egg! Now I'm really leaning towards our bantam Cochin Luna, because polish aren't good layers. This is a bantam egg right?

If you where to modify this Aero Garden, wouldn't be a nice incubator? Lol

Have a question for anyone.....while out feeding and watering my birds I let them out of the coop for little. I was watching them and noticed one of my hens ate a small piece of red plastic that was on the ground

I couldn't believe it....I am concerned now that it won't digest and that it will kill her. Or.....do you think it will pass through her...

Our chicks often eat and poop plastic. love Styrofoam. No apparent ill effects but we try to keep availability to a minimum.

 seems funny to fly all the way to Atlanta to get to DC...have a good trip!

Yeah..Flew out of Flint instead of Metro today. Really no direct flights out Flint...well, unless ur going to Atlanta !!

Finally at hotel. Long day...already. Was a 1.5 hour drive from DC to final destination. It is 52 here

Wish I were here during summer, right here on Chesapeake Bay near the Naval Air Station.

I need food...and CHOCOLATE...

Tomorrow I am finding somewhere to get me some good ole Maryland. Crab cakes!
