Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Nice to meet you all! It's great to see such a strong chicken community in Michigan!
Hello and welcome!

I picked up Penny today! She chatted with me all the way home. Was totally freaked out when she first met the goats... they were all looking at each other like.. what the heck are you? Penny would have been happier if I had stayed out there with her. She is super friendly and not much bigger than the Nigerians. I can't wait to get her shorn in Feb.
Penny is adorable.

Lady, every time you post a photo of your birds, I swoon over the buffs. Pretty

Always trying to be cost conscience I carefully read ingredients and oft times discover that the packaging is the majority of the cost for many items. I wouldn't pay the price for dedicated leg scale products when mineral oil is substantially cheaper. Place some in a spray bottle and thoroughly spray the leg and foot. I once wanted to treat some birds for leg mites and didn't have any mineral oil so I used Avon's Skin So Soft. Worked great and sure had some nice smelly birds for a few days. Any petroleum based product will work but some you can spray will be much easier to apply.
My mom has SSS in a spray bottle so I will get that from her (or have the husband do it since he often works out that way). Hopefully she didn't throw it away in her recent bathroom cupboard purge!

Yup... the redcote comes in a spray or in a bottle with a dauber. Th spray sure does make it easier to apply to legs, even with all the feathers. Give them a good soak, use a oft toothbrush and brush the scales, you'll be amazed at how many will fall off just from that soaking, then dry em up, and coat them up. Check the other birds. Do any that have any bit of lifted scales.

Do you know if Blu-kote would work? I already have a bottle of it....I will probably have to do all of their legs. *sigh* 6 silkies in the house for at least a day, 3 of which are roosters. This ought to be fun. Maybe I'll just get them started first thing in the morning and blow-dry them.....

Though now that I think of it, the others' legs were NOTHING like this poor girl's. Maybe I can get away with just spraying them down.

Where could I find redcote?
Tractor Supply (or similar) should carry it. My *blu-kote* is in a smallish yellow pump-spray bottle.

It is I. About three yrs ago. Beard comes and goes but usually on my face. Almost white now.

I wondered- Hi!

Blue Kote isn't oily so it wouldn't be as effective

If Opa says mineral oil will work, it will, folks. Not to say anything about longevity, but some people do tend to learn given enough time, and Opa is getting pretty learned

. And mineral oil is cheap and safe.

Spent most of my spare time today removing the 1" thick layer of ice on the driveway pad and in front of the door at work, needed doing before our temps drop again. Love these mid-January thaws, they give you an opportunity to catch up without freezing.
