Many broodies also get a maniacal gaze, a horrible growl, and will remove large chunks of skin when you try to get the eggs out from underneath them.

My Broody's always growl and attack anything that is near.

Maybe I'm just getting old and grumpy but it really irks me on how bias the news medial is becoming.  ABC's feature last Friday about kids and guns was just one more example of using "facts" to mislead the public to come to a conclusion based on misinformation and personal bias.

The death of any child is tragic but the inflated numbers they used weren't all what I would call children.  The CDC number  is up to age 19 and is all gun deaths including crime and drug related.  A small percentage were gun accidents with children under age 10.

It's not just you, or being old, DH was fuming about the same thing yesterday. We were the odd parents that never allowed our son to "play" guns. All guns were always treated as real whether it was a toy or not, as in how it was handled and pointed. There was never any pretending to shoot the dog. I am also the odd ball that thinks all school age children should be taught what to do if they find a gun.

Today was a nice day. Lots of sun and 15 degrees. DS and I went snowshoeing today to check out tracks. I think we have a skunk living in an old fox den. Titus, the pup, came with us and it tired him out nicely wading and hopping through the deep snow.
Then I spent an hour out with my chickens because I WANTED to not because I had to. I haven't had a chance to be out with them and enjoy it, not shoveling or watering or cleaning. The frost bitten combs are drying up nicely on the little bantams. It makes me wonder if they are susceptible to it and that perhaps that is why they are dubbed as a standard. I found two more bloody spots on the wall of my small coop but no bloody birds. So I'm wondering if I had just missed it while freezing and trying to care for everyone quickly. On an odd note, I have seen airplanes the past two days. I know it's weird but we just haven't seen anything in the sky but white snow for so long!

I am considering going back to added light. I'm not sure if it is the light or the cold that has made a huge difference but 4-5 eggs a day for my 50 girls is just sad.

I gave my sons BB guns when they were 6 years old and 22s when 10, shotguns at 12 and it was for reasons of need and finances rather than ages. However, all guns were treated as tools that if misused could result in a tragic result. When they got BB guns I made jello in a cup, removed it once set, and then used it as a target. This demonstrated the damage that a BB would do to an eye. During their childhood they propably shot thousands of rounds yet never at anything other than a target or game. Safety starts when they are able to walk and never ends.

Hens that favor you aren't nearly so mean, though. My last broody only growled and pecked lightly.

I think one of my girls is "considering" whether she'll go broody. No other way to describe it. Fed and watered yesterday morning as usual; found 3 eggs. When she spied me looking at the eggs (i don't grab right away, i try to focus them on morning treats and not the egg stealer) she boogied right over and sat on them. Then when i reached under to take them she made a really funny sound, and kinda stayed standing part way until i slid them back under. Tried a couple times, same thing! Last time i tried giving her 1, no-stink eye. 2? Nope still stink-eye. Ok all 3? Humph and settle. Tell me they can't count! Hmph. I know her eggs and i'm sure one of them was hers, so not laying.........

Very clear chicken talk, but i doubt she's serious. She watched the other girl in all her broody glory getting to raise her baby, though......we'll see.

When it comes to the statistics that we are all bombarded with in the media or any other source, I believe it is incumbent upon everyone to not just take them at face value or "truth". It is very easy to take ANY data set & "select" the data out of it to give a result that fits the organization's "agenda"...whether "for" OR "against" something.

I am sure with all the proposed GAAMP changes, those in the government proposing said changes have some sort of statistics "backing up" why it is "so important & necessary" to adopt the changes. That is why we need to thank all the folks here on the thread that are educating themselves & won't just accept what is going on. Without educating ourselves on any particular area, whether controversial or not, it is easy to just take what is "told" to us as "fact".

Over the last 3 weeks, I have had the fortune of being immersed in statistics in the classes I have been taking. I have always said, "I can take any data you give me & make it tell ya whatever you want". The classes have just re-enforced that. A couple of quotes I LOVED before we started the Stats section last week:

STATISTICS: The only science that enables different experts using the same figures to draw different conclusions.

STATISTICIAN: A man who believes figures don't lie, but admits that, under analysis, some of them won't stand up either

Personally, I never "believe" figures that are thrown at me, whether they happen to back up my personal views or not...

Hope this doesn't offend anyone...but statistics have always driven me nuts since, as Mark Twain said, they are so "pliable"!!

over the years I have seen the same statistics used to "prove" booth sides of many story's
DS and DH were just arguing about/with statistics last Sunday. Our son loves to argue a point,any point, when he comes up Sunday's he will through something out just to start an argument. He has been like this since he was very young, Our girls hated it when they were little, never could win an argument,

now they love it, gets people thinking.
The media takes advantage of those that don't think and just believe what they hear.
