Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Ok. I need coop bedding ideas. My coops are getting pretty bad and I'd like to get them cleaned out while it's warmish this week. Our tsc has no pine shavings and getting them at meijer will cost a LOT. A quick glance at cl tells me that no one has straw listed within 90min of us. I have a 7x6 coop, an 8x10 coop and a 3x8 coop.
you can use wood pellets for horse stalls, works very well, I mix with wood chips and/or hay, if you have poop boards under your roosts you can cover them with empty feed bags I cut them open, they clean very easily , helps to keep the floor clean. I haven't called but CN sawdust is a horse supply they also have chicken and dog feed. there is one on the North end of Rockford not sure were you are but there is a farm on Lincoln Lake between Belding and Lowell. they have both straw and hay

it said out of stock on the 'regular' ones, but I might take a look at the website and call them. That's kind of a hike for me, but it needs done.

I had considered the pine pellets, but I would need a LOT of bags of those versus just 6 of the pine shavings.

Hi Everyone,

We are looking to start our flock here in the suburbs. The breed we thought fit us best are the New Hampshire reds. We wondered if anyone has any chicks hatching soon or if anyone notices at TSC there are chicks for sale. We are looking for 4-5 chicks which have to be female due to the rules of Farmington Hills. Willing to drive to pick them up.

Thank you!
James

I wondered about the wood pellets. We use them in our cats' litter boxes and they work like a charm. An inch of pellets turns into about 4 inches of sawdust once it's gotten moistened. How long do the wood pellets last before you feel you need to change them out?

I've used peat moss for chicks. It works and is good in the compost pile afterwards.
