Amy, about the bantams; John Blehm in Birch run have Ameracaunas, both large and bantams. He may still have some available to order, and he sells some chicks on craigslist also. My very nice Ameracauna bantam pullet is from his cull chicks last April__she's not the correct color, but a wonderful bird, and I'm not about show quality anyway. Cute aqua eggs! Mary

Meaties are going to get a LOT bigger at LOT faster than other chicks. You could probably brood them together for a few weeks, and I know that people successfully raise them together, but I would separate them after a couple of weeks if I had the space. Easier to control how much they eat that way (and they are going to poop 5x more than your other chicks)

It depends on how many chicks you have, it sounds like you are just doing a few, I have done it both ways, together with a small bunch and separate. I have found separating them is good for a couple reasons; 1. they hog the food from your other chicks, 2 they grow so much faster in about 3-4 weeks they are going to dwarf your other chicks, 3 feed control, I feed a special higher protein fermented mix to my meat birds. 4. they make a mess and they poop a ton, obviously eating more they poop more and so you have to either clean their pen more or use more bedding if you do deep layer, as i do its only 8 weeks with them but they do make a mess. anyway just my thoughts on them. I have 25 going right now that are 2 weeks old and they are already double the size maybe triple the size of the welsummers I got at the same time.

We had -3 this morn, a big improvement over yesterdays -15. It was snowing when I got up at 6 and still is. Winter is well and hearty here.


My sad news is that I am going to have to rehome my Icelandics. This summer I will be away from them for a couple of months, it cant be gotten around and they need better care then they'd get. Its a health issue, and I dont see it significantly changing, so without going into it thats what is.

All in all there is about 20, with about 5 extra roosters that will probably go to freezer camp soon.

The oldest are 3 coming 4 year olds. And right now they are divided into 3 breeding groups. There are two 3 and 4 yr old roosters, both fertile but housed separately now. Hens are mostly 2012 and 2013 hatched.

There is NO price for these !

For those interested I also have a GQF Incubator w/turner, a hatcher, and miscl chicken equipment, I will offer these as groups with their equipment including feeders and waterers. There are also 5 water heaters.

I have been trying to think of any other way around this but this is the best solution for all. I think a LOT of my Icelandics and want the best for them.

PM me for any other details, but what I am offering to serious people is a breeding group of Icelandic Chickens , a rooster and hens. 3 different groups, two lines of different importations.

There is equipment also available including 5 raised pens, feeders and waterers, and five waterer heaters.

mattsinger, my breeder says the marans are not sexable at birth, but generally after 10 or so days the tail feathers become more prominant on the roo's. Hope that helps.

see that is odd becuase all of my BCMs that are 8 weeks old now, all the ones with little to no tail feathers are the ones who now have the big red combs...

Hey fellow Michiganders! I need a little help if possible. I am located in Manistee, MI. I ordered and hatched some beautiful Olive Eggers about 9 months ago from Florida since I couldn't find any here. Now I have about four roosters in town and the neighbors aren't too happy. They are gorgeous and already breeding so they will make more olive Eggers, especially dark if they cover some Marans. Pets only, not for killing. Send me a personal message if interested! Jake, sad to hear you've got to unload everything. There is a Facebook page dedicated to selling chickens in michigan. That might help also.

Good luck Jake. i know your birds are well-loved & the ones we got from you last fall are being spoiled & are doing great. We have some of the iowa blues & some of the delaware eggs in an incubator currently & due to hatch around march 19th. Wish we had the extra room & coop space to adopt them - we wouldnt hesitate for a second if we could

I have some of his lavender amaricaunas, standard but bantam size I have not separated them yet but plan to do it soon, have been worried about the -0 temps, if you don't have a broody to soon, I may be able to help, Mine are from M. Blehm very sweet birds very pretty Robin egg blue, eggs
