Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Thanks everyone for the congratulations for my engagement and the birth of my niece. My grandparents have been married for 61 years, and my parents have been married for 31 years, so I do hope for a very long and happy marriage for Grace and I. :)

My coops and cow shed and hog sheds are more than 250 feet from the neighbors homes, so I am safe for the time being. But I am very depressed for my fellow farmers/small livestock owners that are not as fortunate as I was. :( I am so ticked off!
I'm confused more now then ever about who is and who is not protected with this new change! Farmerboy, are you zoned res or ag? How many acres do you have?

We only have 5, but I just got a lease of 6 acres for my cows to graze on for this growing season, its just down the road. The owner only charged $1 for it, but I gave him a dozen of my freshest eggs instead. :D I am pretty sure that we are zoned Res, but I don't care as the nearest home is about 414 feet from my coop using the link that Ladyrsanti gave, and as long I had chickens(12 years),cattle(3 years), hogs(2 years), goats(one year), no one had complained.

I may be a little confused on the new law that passed about chickens.. (We are getting them next year regardless) Our coop will dwfinw be 250+ feet from the nearest house as we have 2 acres but there is a small subdivision near us and we are pretty close to 13 houses.. What is the beat way to figure out how many homes withina 1/8 of a mile of us? And if we have our chickens and get a visit from the city what should we expect (fees, etc) I'm considered city of Saginaw but I live in the city of Zilwaukee with a farm field to the right of my property and across the street (Neither owned by us).

Thanks for all the advice!! Hopefully everyone made it through the storms last night okay!!

And how noisy are chickens

I think if you are Zoned res...your ability to have anything will be at the whim of your township.. possibly the neighboring township as well..to decide what you can do on your land.. good luck!

I did sell the eggs later out in the street, just like a drug deal.

First of all, this change DID NOT change the law. The law can only be changed by the legislature.
This is an end-run to circumvate the law for some operations and to outright deny access to the law for other people. This action is probably a Constitutional violation that will end up in court.

First off, the wording is intentionally vague and misleading. It also fails to reference the facility setback of 1500 feet that is written in the body of the GAAMP.
Map your house, pinpoint your coop or run then draw a circle of 1/8 mile (660) feet, count the houses within the circle. If 13, then no joy, if 1 is within 250 feet then no joy. Your house may count, they were evasive about that. Now to add to the confusion, your livestock "facility" (coop) has a setback requirement of 1500 feet.

There is no way to tell what the city will do to you if they visit. Some inspectors are open to bribes and others will threaten you and your family. It depends on your local ordinance nazi. Good luck.
Silly, would you be willing to publish this that other can share? Similar drawings for raw milk or heritage hams?

Sure raz, I would want to clean it up a bit, I just tossed it out there from your comment earlier!

PS ... I'M SO EXCITED, I was able to pick up the new lamb for a proper inspection, and it's NOT a ram, IT'S an EWE!!!!!
Happy dance!

It's interesting here that none of the dairy farms/beef farms/poultry farms/hog farms/goat farms are 1,500 feet setback from anything. Shall be interesting...I think I'll go to my next door neighbor who is running quite an operation and see what he thinks of all this since his family has been farming the area for two generations.

I kept my two good boys
They have jealous scuffles ( blue bunny don't like sharing my attention with little maurice, maurice is 3 and thinks bunny is scary-1 yr. Neither have a bit of tough in them. Lol )
