Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

@SillyChicken , yep, good luck on the land grab.

I put ACV in my goat's water. Besides making the water sweeter, and other obvious benefits, it's supposed to help keep the mosquito's from bothering them so much.

A short observation about a common garden item. Being from New England cucumbers are cucumbers period. No other name. When I moved to Sault Ste. Marie in 1999 my first experience with the term "pickle" had me in tears. A gardener said he was picking "pickles". What? How do you go from cucumber to pickle without adding vinegar? Is this just his unusual term? Well, obviously, I have heard the term over, and over, now for 15 years. Yesterday I saw a sign that read "pickles for canning" LOL, you mean "pickling cukes"? I'll never give in to this one - Cukes are Cukes until you add Vinegar and make em pickles!

Disclaimer: My Mom's from Michigan City, Indiana and her family were farmers but I've never asked her what they called Cucumbers. I'll have to do some research.

One of my neighbors is a full time apiarist and supply bees and hives to orchards throughout the state. 've been buying honey from him for years. This morning he gave me a bottle of what is probably the lightest colored honey ever. He says he's never had nicer honey than this year's crop.

Hi All,

I have some roosters that I must re-home. My hens are taking quite a beating and I simply have too many roos. I'm afraid the neighbors are going to start complaining also. All of them are very nice guys. I would prefer not to put them on Craig's List and would like them to go to good homes. They are free. I am in Clarkston.

1. Two very pretty Bantam Americanas -Hatched last July 3rd from eggs I bought on Ebay, so they are a little over a year old.

2. Mixed Cochin, will be a year old in Sept. He is mostly blue with some red/orange feathers. His dad is a very large splash cochin.

3. Serama - also an ebay egg hatched last July 3rd so he is a little over a year old.

4. Brabanter- also an ebay agg hatched last July 3rd. He is the only one who has given me a bit of trouble. He ignores me but if I pick up a hen and she fusses he will come after me. He doesn't like me messing with his girls, otherwise he leaves me alone. He really is quite the character. He is light weight enough to fly to the top of the coop where he lets out his first crow of the morning.

5. Blue Orpington - I purchased him as a chick last spring so he is a little over a year old. HE IS A SPECIAL NEEDS GUY. He seemed fine as a tiny chick but as he grew it was obvious that something wasn't right with him. He gets along just fine but walks with a wobble like he is dizzy. He is very pretty and a sweet guy. He would do great in a one rooster coop, I think. He gets a little picked on here with all of the other roos.

I wouldn't have been able to log in if I wasn't validated..... correct?
No problem, I can wait...will check back later. Looking forward to reading the discussions.

@RaZ I have been notified via email that I have to join the Michigan Small Farm Council to participate in, or even read, the Michigan Small Farm Forum.

Here is the link to join MSFC, http://www.michigansmallfarmcouncil.org/join-us.html, if anyone else is interested or having trouble accessing that forum.

anyone ever have a rooster be so devoted that he will fan out his wings and crouch down to cover chicks, help call them to food and be really watchful over them? Uggo has been one of the best rooster dads ever!

So remember last year I was all hopeful about the situation regarding the land bordering ours.. they had a tax notice posted on the property again this year......... that makes 3 years and the notice said they were going to foreclose. I am keeping my fingers crossed that we may have another chance to get our hands on it!

Raz, good luck man.......
I had a rooster that ran out of the run to hover over a hen and chicks when a hawk flew over
I have one now that feeds the chicks and even checks out the nesting box for the hens , rooster are fun tho watch, and the friendly ones are keepers

Anyone looking for baby bunnies to buy??? I have 2 litters of netherland dwarfs 1 pet litter ($20 each *siamese sable sold*) and 1 show litter (papered $50 each)
I just love these little guys. Are they all sold? Will you be doing more that are papered in the fall?

Any chance anyone is looking for a black Silkie too for paint breeding? He's black with sliver leakage - which I'm told is great for paint project. Located in Jackson county. He needs to go soon as we are not suppose to have roosters here.
