Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Any advise to a newbie who is to inherit a flock with the purchase of a house (just moving back to MI after 10+ years in NY)? Will hopefully close mid Feb. Also, any tricks to getting the dogs used to seeing/hearing chickens? I have a 4 year old Saint and a 2 year old Dane.

Not a good way to start out your new year, Stacy. Hop you are ok.

Welcome back, AK. I would defiantly keep the chickens in the run for a few weeks until you see how the dogs react to the chickens. Then, maybe have your dogs on a leash and a firm jerk of the leash and a stern NO every time they show interest in the chickens. It will take some work and time on your part, but can be done. Or else you can be real lucky and they show no interest

Read. A lot ! I kept pet birds my whole life so thought i knew enough-turns out outside birds are a whole other ballpark! Follow these water discussions, so you can pick a plan. If there is no electric flexible rubber livestock dishes will be necessary. Make sure the current owners have lots of bedding in the bird's coop. Be prepared to scoop that poopy bedding out come spring.....but it will help during single digit days. You will love your birds :) welcome back to mi!

Today was officially the end of deer season, although I quit on the 30th when I filled my last doe tag. I briefly considered buying another but with the wind and cold temperatures the old man portion of my brain decided to call it quits.

Since my best friend and hunting partner wasn't able to hunt this year I gave him the doe I shot on the 30th. I had skinned and cleaned the blood from the carcass so when he came to get it we quartered it so he could transport it home easily.

Today Hope and I processed the doe I shot on the 29th and the 6 roasts from the hind quarters will go in the brine tomorrow. After sitting in the brine for 10 days they will be trimmed, covered in coriander and black pepper, then slowly cooked and smoked. End result is a unbelievably good pastrami.

About 12 pounds of very clean ground will be made into some type of sausage tomorrow. I haven't decided whether to make summer sausage or salami but I have the night to decide.

I managed to cler out enough room in the garage for a brooder... so I guess its time to put some eggs down. Ive got some Blue Copper and Black Copper Marans, Cream Legbars and Altsteirer.

for dogs and birds....it takes time...I have two pits and have shared these pics...at first they didn't get along...now they protect....be patient....that's all I can say it will work out....you have to work with the dogs...pm me if you wanna know how I did it
