Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Welcome to the new folks! I've never raised turkeys but have eaten farm raised (YUMMY!) . They are best raised separately from chickens because of disease issues (for the turkeys) and remember that there's three pounds of feed per one pound body weight; a 40 lb. bird takes at least 120 lbs. of feed! They will taste great, but not be inexpensive to raise. I'm sticking with freedom ranger chickens, much more manageable. Mary

Yeah part of the reason I am looking at turkey is that I follow the blood type diet and I can have turkey and not chicken bummer huh but I can tell a physical difference when I eat chicken. So there is that. I also plan t o free range and use fermented feed for them. I already used ff for my chickens and pigs and I also sprout wheat for them as well so I that helps with feed cost plus I get my feed from a mill and I get my corn for 11 a hundred lb and layer mash for 11.25 for 50lb so its not to bad really because I would pay over 40 for a 40 lb turkey at the store the grower I think is only like 12 so again its close enough to make it viable

I was lucky that I didn't have any drifting where I have to shovel...actually had one drift that formed 18" away from the doors on one of my sheds, so less shoveling there.
The snow thrower on my ancient little JD L&G tractor makes for 'fun' and pretty easy work to clear the driveway, even the massive amount of plow wash from the shouldered road I live on...tho it rarely fails that I clear the drive, then they plow the shoulder.

This pic is from '07, that tractor is now a parts tractor and I have a newer one of the same series.
After last winter, I had many a warm thought about getting something like an enclosed cab bobcat with a snowblower attachment, or an enclosed cab John Deere with a front end loader. Still not happy that Dad got the Ford 2120 with a front end loader in the separation. I'm pretty sure I would have built a small glacier last year down by the creek with all of the build up snow we had last year if I still had that front end loader.

Hi to all the new posters!

Opa very glad you were awake and got to celibrate it with cake. I hope this does what it is supposed to, and you can enjoy your birds without stress again!

I found at least one female dove the other is a should be but no certainty with doves! Took 24 hours but my male of her color accepted her. The male bonded to me showed no interest other than stealing food, lol. The other pair is tangerine, if the male accepts (her?) And will be rehomed probably.

Hi everyone. A fellow Michiganian here, just beginning my chicken journey.
I've learned a lot already from this site and the forum. It's great to have a community like this.

Your doves are so pretty

Hope you are on the mend Opa. I hear you about pain meds and how they make you feel "weird". I try to avoid them also. I also try not to avoid cake. Have a good day.

The most important part of any surgery is the waking up part, and since I am typing this I can state with confidence that that part worked. Now if the actual procedure worked I will be a happy camper.

Glad to hear the surgery is behind you and the cake is in front of you. I pray your surgery was a complete success.

Just had a really long post written..then BYC crashed :he
Hadn't been here in 6 days...so...

@RaZ
So sorry about Majick..
@Opa
Glad all went well yesterday. Hope this takes care of your year plus long ordeal..
@uchytil
Hope all went well with ur dads surgery. Oh, and if you had eaten all the Mounds Bar brownies en route to CS last year, it would've been ugly!

Welcome to all the newcomers!

Girls are finally earning their keep again..up from 1-3 eggs/day to 4-7.

While literally snowed in Monday made a new cheesecake. If you like Girl Scout Samoas..this is for you. Also used Neufchâtel cheese for the first time & a baking method that included water bath..don't know if it was a combo of the 2, but by far best base cheesecake I've ever made and it'll be my forever go to base!
