Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Beautiful day even if my driveway is a swimming pool. Oldest did donuts last fall by front of barn so big hole never got filled in. It's kinda deep. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh!!! no really?

Chickens free-ranged all day long no issues. 16 eggs for the day. Cookie has decided she wants to live under the deck stairs. She runs around behind me and hides as I sweep them all back to coop for bed, but she can't keep quiet enough not to get caught.

(she's done this twice now)

Now that it's warming up I can stay out there longer and figure out who is actually not laying yet. My highest collection has been 18 out of 26. I am so anxious for my little Midnight to lay her 2nd egg. her first one was in Oct, then she stopped for the season.

Tonight's supper was a boiled dinner of corned beef, cabbage, carrots, and potatoes. Sure tasted good, and having made the corned beef myself from the beef my son gave me made the meal even better.

the best meals are from stuff you grow or raise yourself...there is something of you that goes into it...and it returns the gift....and the trees are tapped...let the sap flow.......

Are there any mid Michigan (I'm in Gratiot Co.) heritage turkey breeders around? Would like Slates, Bourbons, Narris or mutts of said breeds.
Check out best farm buys and craigslist. There are several near flint. I got my first bourban reds from Flushing, but don't remember his name.

March is the start of the wet and muddy. While I'm tired of the snow, I hope it goes off slow. A gradual melt allows the soil to absorb the water instead of it racing off to fill the rivers to flood stage. Last year's melt resulted in swollen streams, flooded boat launches, and river levels too high to fish safely.

By the time water levels had receded most steelhead had come and gone. Hopefully this year will be much better. I think Wednesday I'll try the lower Huron. Walleye is still open so maybe I'll pick up both them and steelhead.
Me too on the slow melt. Good lluck with your fishing. How's you old farmer friend doing?

I took a pail of old eggs out to the apple tree I dump stuff for the animals at today, saw lots of tracks but no animals. A coon had walked my fence line for a ways which assured me it really is coon proof. I would like to dump one in there for a couple of days to be sure, but not bad enough to trap one to do it. The only birds I'm free ranging are the geese and a tom Bourbon Red turkey. Something tried to get the turkey last night- he's missing a patch of feathers and the darker it gets the more I'm thinking I should have locked him up for safety. I hope whatever it was doesn't try again. If it ever starts staying above freezing at night, my chicks are all going outside, with a heat lamp. Does anyone close to Millington have chukars? I've got one and it would probably be happier with buddies. I don't know what sex it is, Its my sole survivor from an attempt to let them free range a couple of years ago. D*** cats.

Anyone near Toledo? I need to find a good home for two roosters, we have 3 and they are starting to fight in earnest!
What breed are they? We are traveling on Wednesday to south central MI for a wedding on Thursday. Depending on the breed I'll take one.

Hi neighbor, if you hear if anyone who wants a free rooster, you can send them my way!

Do you live in Toledo? I live in Bedford Township, but work in Toledo, so I am there almost every day. I thought I read something the other day about City counsel taking up the issue of chickens in the city.

And now I know what "jugging" means.
So I ventured into TSC and escaped unharmed. All that the South Lyon store had were ISA browns, mixed bantams and ducks. Nothing that I needed (wanted).

While waiting for a prescription at Meijer, I looked at the bargain bin of DVDs. I picked up "Old West Outlaws - 20 Western Films" for $4.99. Some of these films are so terrible that they are funny. Even the ones with big name stars.
Went to TSC myself today and was getting some supplies for some chicks I'm getting on Tuesday. and yeah, they had chicks there. And well, I couldn't help myself...

Gave it to the girlfriend. She's very excited to go and pick up chicks this week.
