Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

We have had so much melt that it's starting to flood the goat/sheep shed! I closed the door last night (heard lots of coyote activity) and the door was froze shut. I went out today and got hose for a sump pump, we're going to try to syphon the water away, and this summer we're going to have to do some excavation to change the water run off.

And we lost our bee hive to the febuary cold.

Oh wow that stinks. I lost 3 hives last winter, I didn't have any bees this year. I worked out a deal with a friend of mine, who has a couple hundred hives. I am going to get my bees from him this spring. Next fall I give them back to him and he takes them down to some farmers in Georgia and makes some money off them. Then he brings them back the following spring and I stop loosing my hives. I hope everything works out as good as it sounds.

45F here gonna end up being 46F
It hit 50.5 here in Barton City! WOOT!!! It didn't stay there long, 48 now but I'm loving it. I managed to drive my car out the driveway and back (it's a 1/4 mile up hill 2 track) but I suspect tomorrow I'll be sliding all over. Walking the trails with the dogs is getting tough, my feet are going all over the place.

But I have sap flowing out of one tree!

The other 4 have nothing, but I suspect they'll start any time now.

I am definitely Grilling tonight! Yes I'm one of those who grills year round but days like this are made to take advantage of.
Enjoy.

I may actually grill sometime this year, DH just hooked the old gas grill up to the main house propane tank (don't worry, he does know how to do these things.) He mainly did this because he wants to try using it to boil down maple sap. I never grilled because the 20 pound tank always seemed to be empty and I've never been that fond of gas. So, who knows?

Just wanted to say "Hi"! I'm in Michigan too - South west Michigan area.
Hi there, LOVE the name.

Silly sorry about your bees, your new little one is sure cute.

Today was the great rooster culling day. My dh did 11 birds for me. A couple bullies, a couple frostbite victims, and just roosters that were not of any use to me. I considered doing a couple more but I will give them a chance to change my mind. I now have combined 6 coops to 4 coops. Fewer roosters makes it much easier. There was only minimal fighting over roosts when I closed them up for the night. I only feel bad about three that were special guys. My four year old guinea who has survived everything lost her feet, Fred my sons roo who is losing his feet and a little faverolle who was old and in poor condition. I do feel a bit guilty that the guy who survived last week's weasel attach did not survive today.

If you take lightly buttered pumpernickel bread, layer on some sautéed german sauerkraut, a little thousand island dressing, several slices of homemade venison pastrami, some swiss cheese, a second slice of bread, and have browned both sides on a griddle you have a sandwich that is meal.
