Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Thank you, my friend, and your family for your service and sacrifice. I'm honoring my father-in-law this weekend--he passed away 13 years and 3 weeks ago. Never forgotten.

Just got in from feeding the critters and wanted to wish everyone a happy Memorial Day. After serving in in the Armed Forces for 31 years active duty and finishing in Iraq I can say that everyone should keep it in mind that we as citizens owe it to guys and gals that lay it on the line to let us keep our affairs the way we like. That said:

Going to be a busy weekend trying to finish another goat house for my boys. Start my new pig pen and pig quarters. And just general gardening chores. I'm sure everyone is going to be super busy since it's that time of the year to be super busy (or super lazy and enjoy the sunshine)!

I'll be at Burley Park on Monday. The huge flea market off 131 north of GR, just east of Newago. It's pretty fun and only happens on big holidays like this one, the 4th, Labor Day, and once in Oct.

That's it. No more computer till next week...

So.. I have 27 chickens, and they all are healthy and growing big. I built a coop 10 by 12 gamble style. I wasn't expecting all the chicks to live, I know that sounds horrible.. Will that be enough room for my chickens? We are still putting the Chicken Run in, but will take pictures of it soon. Oh yes, Five of the chickens will mostly re-homed or eaten, so only 22 chickens if no other cockerels pop up. It's 3 feet per chicken, I think I saw somewhere on here?

10x12 = 120 sqft divided by 22 = 5.45 sqft per chicken.
4sqft per chicken is a minimum(IMO) rule of thumb.

Sounds pretty good to me.......if all that 10x12 floor space is usable by birds.
Could get tight if you have any 'behavioral' problems.
Even better if you use roosts with poop boards as it offers some space during those long winter days they can't/won't go outside.

X2

You should be fine, always keeping in mind that it is always best to not crowd birds - just causes problems when they get older.

Does anyone have a picture of a 6 month old cockerel vs. pullet? I can't figure out what mine is and can't find many pictures of 6 month olds!
What breed?

Probably best to post good pics(full body side view and close up of head) of your bird here or on the 'what gender is this' forum.

At 6 months hackle and saddle feather should be easily identified.....if it's not already crowing or laying.

In my limited experience that is what I was thinking as well. I'd also be curious to see pictures of the lovely ladies/gents.

Doesn't sound horrible. I have six. And since I've killed many a houseplant in my day, I am quite happily surprised to say they've all been in good health so far (knocks on wood). After reading as much as I did I thought I'd have lost at least one by now. Just gave another one an Epsom salt bath to quell any infection in that little scrape on the pad of her little foot.

Just checked out Rudy my rooster's foot and noticed a bit of a bump on it.

Think this is something to be concerned about? I cleaned it and peroxide'd it just to be safe
