Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I'm in Redford, and I breed chickens, ducks, and geese. They don't like chickens in Livonia, and I believe that somewhere there are laws written about it. When we moved to this area we could afford to live anywhere in the area and we chose Redford because of lack of chicken laws (and proximity to downtown and public transportation/bikeability, but I digress). The area's not super chicken friendly. Whatever you decide to do, be careful. If you're already a farm on acreage they may leave you alone. I say this because I've sold good roosters to people who live in Livonia that I know sell eating eggs, but I've also known people that city have gone after. So I have no clue how they'll treat you. They could ignore you forever or just for years, or they could be a rear end and go after you right away.

...so yeah, not helpful really. Just good luck, and if you take the plunge, come and hang out on the Michigan thread once in a while so our little area can be better represented.

...NOT TO BE AN ENABLER, but Tractor Supply has chick days coming up soon if you did want to get your birds for less than a pretty penny...

...and I guess I do sell birds sometimes too, but more like heritage meat type birds. If you want a plethora of eggs for minimum cost they'd make you feel like this :he . English orpingtons only make sense from a practical standpoint when you get a rooster or two and breed them for eggs AND meat.

So Sorry :( was he covered with lice, and their egg casings?

I didn't see a severe case (No obvious clusters of eggs) on the hen I lost and I didn't see any on him either so maybe there was more to why they both died.
Everyone else seems to be in great health though. Bright red combs and active. I will be keeping a close eye on all of them for any signs of issues.

Welcome back, John, and welcome, Steph! Looking forward to seeing you at CS, and talking on this site, as I don't do Facebook.
It's above freezing today!!!! Must enjoy this week, before it gets colder again.
I can't avoid TSC, and get trapped by chicks there too often. We've got a Cackle order coming in early April, and I plan on hatching some of mine too. Not now!
Mary

Everyone enjoying the 'heat wave'?
We got some ice then a couple more inches of snow overnight.
We've gotten almost 3' in the last two weeks.
Piles are lowering, eave drifts are dripping, but no 'flooding' as of yet.
So glad I kept the run partially shoveled out,
all the birds came outside today for the first time in 2 weeks.
Rain is coming Wednesday...hoping for a slow but significant melting of snow.

Welcome Newbie!! Nice to see you John and Glambka.
I also see a lot of feathers in the coop.
The hens were so happy to be out in their run yesterday. Found some loose sand to bathe in.
We got about 3 in of heavy wet snow yesterday, but a lot has melted. Today another heat wave so more snow to melt!

Lice do eat blood, out of the broken feather shafts, and will cause anemia. They are easier to eliminate than mites, but treating the coop is still a good idea. KILL the little xxxx's!!! Mary

Hey all, it's been a Long time since I've been on and hoping you all are having a good new year especially with the horrible cold weather we've been having. Had some health issues last year but I am back into egg art (Pysanky) and creating educational kits for the kiddies. Look really looking forward to this year's chickenstock and bringing some pysanky to share.
Need some help… I am LOOKING to buy white large sized chicken eggs for Easter pysanky.
I live near Selfridge Air Force Base in Southeast Michigan. If anyone has eggs for sale not too far from there, please message me.

We lost two roosters to mites ....Horrible infestation late fall and difficult cold weather fighting. And we lost one of our young Iowa boys to the cold last week. First loss due to cold because we found nothing else by looking him over.

@glambka ...So great to see your note!!! We have light gray/whitish duck eggs and extra large white eggs from our leghorn hens. Let me know if interested in those :)

Welcome to Steph :frow

Hi to John @uchytil and Cindy..Let's get Chicken stock going :clap

Quick update: arm is in a cast for several weeks. Official procedure was a radial row carpectomy. Makes doing chicken chores difficult. Turning the waterer is the worst, I spill most of it on myself.
State is not cooperating with my attorney. Maybe they are holding a grudge from when I was fighting the chicken laws.

Things look pretty bleak.
