Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

So nice to have reasonable weather, today, and this weekend! We didn't get any rain, so it's pretty dry, but cool enough.
My oldest hen died today; she was a cute Belgian d'Uccle, five years old. Found her tonight; heart failure. She seemed fine yesterday, and had a nice life.
Tomorrow, chicks and a few adults going to the Geyer auction. Time to thin the ranks, and not do craigslist. I just can't keep everyone, and this is the first 'herd reduction' this summer.

Good luck at the auction today. Sorry for your loss. I just rehome a young rooster this week. The first time I have given away a bird. Wasn't prepared for how hard it was.

It is hard! I have chicks from Cackle, and chicks hatched here, and it's great, but then the 'subtraction' phase of chicken math is necessary. Lots of nice cockerels, and only a very very few stay here! And growing all these chicks to adulthood will overcrowd everyone, so some need to leave now. I took a bunch to Chickenstock, and brought many home, so here they go!

Sorry about that. I was on the way and just couldn't make it. First CS I've missed since I found this site. :hit

My city chickens have been reduced to just 3 birds, thanks to several predators. The lavender orp roo I got a few months back just doesn't do a good job of protecting.

I picked up 14 chicks from a breeder. Lavender and chocolate orps. She says they are all pullets. Something to do with a sex-linked colour trait. I have to wait to see if that is true.
Then I picked up another 14 buff orps the other day. They are about 10-12 weeks old. The lady got them from the pullet bin at FFH chick days. One is definitely a roo. Since Larry let the girls get taken he might have to be replaced. He is just a pretty boy not a guardian. Dammit.

Anyway, the roof goes up on the new coop today and I'll put a divider in to keep the colours separate. That back injury really set me back on my work.:(

Have plenty of nest boxes cuz those orps are very broody prone! :D Take care of that back. Don't overdue.
Beautiful weather. Love it being a bit cooler.
