Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Silly that is so unfortunate about your you exclamation can you preserve the skin with the fleece on it? Or maybe clip her? Post is shorthand for postmortem also called necropsy

We got a blend of snow sleet hail and some kind of wet pellet that ended up coating everything in a hard crust of ice and snow. Very strange. Windy too, you could hear it just roaring like a freight train in the trees last night

Crazy windy here as well. Over 20 MPH sustained with gusts near 40. I lost power sometime over night. Woke up to blinking clocks.
Loss of power here is is a routine occurrence. I think the power grid was installed by Edison himself. The poles on my property are in bad shape even though they have been shored up several times over the years.

Three eggs so far today. Nearly all of the RSL are squatting. The Wyandots don't seem interested yet.

Yes...we are right at the bottom and east end of lake effect depending on which way the wind is blowing. We will often have 3-6 more inches than folks that are just a mile or 2 south or east of us.

It was so still yesterday. Cold, but at least you weren't blasted with blowing snow in your face. Schools closed early on Friday because the roads were getting so bad and the white outs. The next two weeks are suppose to be repeats.
Everyone go somewhere warm? No posts since Friday.

Yesterday was a beautiful day. Cold, but beautiful. Another store was short handed so I when down there to help out. I left before sunset so I wouldn't have to drive after dark. Glad I did. The dirt roads were sheets of ice. The paved roads were all good but you know me...the path least followed. ;)

They are predicting snow for later today. I better go fetch some more firewood.

Hi everyone, We bought a house in October that came with 12 chickens, they were part of the deal. The previous owner had just built the coop in the summer so he didn't have them very long before he sold the house and it was very apparant how little knowledge he had of chicken keeping. Anyway, we moved in and suddenly I had 12 chickens to care for with zero knowledge. I've been doing my best and learning what I can online however I don't have the time to care for them. We own our own business and I'm spending more time caring for the chickens than being at our shop and I just can't continue like this, plus the fact I don't have the experience to properly care for them. I'm hoping to find someone who would like to add to their flock or has the room for some/all. I have 8 Rhode Island Reds, 4 Barred Rocks - all hens, and excellent layers. I'm not sure how old they are, if I had to guess I'd say no more than a year old but like I said before I don't know anything about chickens! They have grown on me and I'm upset about having to do this but I just can't do it anymore and they deserve a more experienced and knowledgable caretaker. I've talked to some people at feed stores and emailed a couple local farms but I don't know what else to do. I feel like it was very irresponsible of the previous owner to get these chickens and then pawn them off on whoever bought his house without a care. I haven't even finished unpacking yet because I've had to work on the coop/run to fix his mistakes and make it right because he had no clue. They weren't even roosting properly when we moved in, they were sleeping on top of eachother on one little perch in the run. I have since trained them to roost in the coop. I'm in Brighton, MI, if anyone is interested or can help me in anyway I will forever appreciate it. Thanks! Gail.
The girls have found a wonderful new home, thanks to everyone!
