Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

My son is 10, he loves all things snakes. Loves catching them. Luckily we don't have to worry too much about dangerous snakes. He had to learn to identify all of the snakes in Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota for Science Olympiad this past year, so at least he now knows what he is attempting to catch. I am surprised we don't have too many around our pond, it is full of frogs.

A bittersweet day today. This morning I took four Chantecler cockerels and one pullet to the local auction; they were growing, and going to be trouble in the flock, and it was there, or my freezer. One cockerel has moved to a flock, and the others probably to a meat buyer. They will all be useful, and it's not possible to keep all the cockerels!
Then, my bantam broody's two little eggs are hatching! Very good news! I'm checking on them, but can't disturb mama, so have to wait it out.
Real flock management...
And today is beautiful!!!

Was the pullet just bait for taking the cockerels? :D
I wish I could sell mine, but am now resigned to slaughtering.
Will be glad for the meat in the freezer, but still dread the cleaning up work of it.

Weather has been perfect!!

Got all the old coop bedding mixed with grass and wood chips into the run.
Still have more chips...and learned this morning at the market that they want to bring me the rest of the chips and dump them ...for free. :fl that that holds true.

Love the coolness, but it's a bittersweet reminder that real cold is imminent and I have a boiler pump to replace before it really sets in.

It wasn't a good market day at the auction, but they are gone. Peace!
Only one bantam chick survived, sadly, out of the two eggs. The EE-d'Uccle mix died after hatching, with very crooked legs, at least. The bantam EE looks good though. Mama hen had hysterics when I moved her to the floor with her one baby!
TSC will have chicks through September, they tell me. Crazy! I'm thinking about getting a few meat birds, also crazy.

Love this weather!! To do chores without sweating like a pig (do pigs sweat?) is so refreshing!
We've dispatched about 20 raccoons! I just can't believe we have so many this year. They just keep on coming.....
Sam (Opa) has had a fall acciddnt. Messed up his face. A beautiful black eye. Has broken bones in his face but will not need surgery to fix. Think he has two sprained wrists

Boo to the cold. I've been cutting wood as much as I can since I won't be able to pre-pay for my propane. Working stupid, crazy hours and can't get caught up. Everything is going to sheet all at the same time. :he

I was just wondering how Sam was doing. I lost his phone number. Give him my regards when you see or talk to him.
