It is fun to dump a big pile and watch it quickly spread over the entire run by powerful kicks from busy hens.

I Know, Right!?
No need to spread them.

I've found that some chip piles will rot down in a year...if there's a lot of softwood.
I have one pile that is older and it's mostly 'dirt' now.

It got hacked or something like that.
It's been down since about noon.
We may find out eventually just what happened,
if and when it's finally back up and running.
Must be serious if it's taking so long to repair.

Wood chips. When they remove trees, they usually chip up all the small stuff, like under 4-5" in diameter.

Wood chips are GREAT in the run, but they need to dry out a little, after the chipping process. This helps prevent various mold issues. Why they are so great is that they break down slowly, a "cold" composting. They really help with absorbing all the poop and moisture in the run, so that it doesn't stink.

I have read that cedar is not good. I will see what I can find tomorrow afternoon. I have appointments via video with my doctor andthen a Bible study until noon. I have never bought mulch because they do have chemicals and some are painted and the sun makes them dull, so I do not buy them. Thank you so much for the info.
I will get a picture of teh corrugated material I have for the roof tomorrow as well.

I let the girls out this afternoon around 530pm until 7pm. They seem to be getting to bed a lot earlier since Phoebe is not around. By 7pm they are all up. I think I will need to re-do the timer on the automatic door because it is closing at 730pm and they are already up and ready to sleep. They do wake up around 7am and they begin stretching. So cute to look at them. I did had a little hard time with the head count today. I usually count them as 4 brown, one white and 2 little ones. But now, there is no white one. I have not been able to go out today because I know she is still back there. I will have to wait until Wednesday when the trash collection comes. Thank you so much for your support!

Aromatic cedar, such as bagged cedar bedding, is a poor choice for inside the coop, but in northern Michigan we have primarily white cedar, which is not aromatic. It is fine for the run, which is outside anyway. A year of aging tends to deplete the oils and sap.

Broody on the Roost...so no longer broody after 3 days in the breaker crate.

Now I just hope she starts laying again soon.

Avoid black walnut chips in quantity, it's toxic to many species. A few chips from black walnuts, fine, but not a batch that's mostly from that species.
We've used chips from the city chip plie in the past, very useful, and free.

Would that hold true of the bark as well? Is it from the juglone, or is there something else?

Dream, the first one of course is the hardest. I shed many tears with quite a few when I started. It's always sad, but it does get a bit easier. Just think that I gave them a good life while they were here. Think with Phoebe laying such large eggs caused her to prolapse. I had a hen that had trouble laying from the start. She passed before she was a year old. Always hard to lose the young ones. We make them pets. Give them names and enjoy their antics. I had one hen that developed curled toes and couldn't walk. I put her in a brooder in our heated garage. I had fencing under a tree and she loved being out there where the other hens would lay all around and keep her company. She loved her dust baths. (her legs were fine) She even laid. Gosh, had her for years. She was happpy. What we do for our pets. Most people told me it was just a chicken, put her in a pot. She was my pet. So, I know it's hard for you. Phoebe was special to you. Don't ever worry about calling me.
