BackyardFarmMom; those are some beautiful Uggos !
Congrats!
Thanks! And next year... if I ever get eggs... you too can have your very own uggos... complements of yours truely!

Hard to keep up with everything. Condolences to those who need them. Great pictures to all who shared. Glad everyone is okay. I will definitely steal one of those detergent recipes too. I know next to nothing about guineas except that my sister bought a bunch from someone at Chickenstock this year and they're super cute and bizarre.

Anyone have any great secrets for eggplant? I have nearly a bushel of the little fairytale eggplants and I make a good meatless meatball dinner with eggplant but beyond that, my kids won't touch it. They sort of liked them beer-battered and fried but anything fried is good in their book. I don't fry very often though. I planned on using one in a thai curry but I forgot to buy tofu at the store and I don't plan on going back into Cascade or Lowell until next week (long drive). It's gotta have some protein in it... I have some leftover chicken. Could use that I suppose.

Anyway, here's what I did today. It's the first broom I've ever made. I grow broom corn and have been collecting the tops for a few years now but haven't gotten around to trying the art of broom-making until today. I'm happy with it, though it's definitely far from perfect. It still needs a tie so I can hang it. The cat will chew it to bits if I leave it within his reach. Now I can check off broom-making from my bucket list.

What's interesting is the speed limit on dirt roads is 55 (unless otherwise posted). While I agree that people travel too fast on dirt roads, it is our responsibility to keep our animals and kids out of it for everyone's safety.
The speed limit on our road is 45 because of a campground before it becomes dirt, but there are a ton of people who ignore that. My kids are teens so they know to stay out of the road, but who's to say if someone flying down the road tries to swerve to avoid something and winds up going into our yard and possibly hitting one of them? They already left a huge divot once. DH and I have told the kids repeatedly not to be near the road because people drive too fast and you just never know if the drivers will always be able to handle their vehicles properly. But, honestly, I would think that most people should be aware of their surroundings and drive accordingly. There are fields and thus deer which run back and forth from our property all the time. You're not going to be able to go blowing by my house knowing one won't pop up in front of you because our property has a tree line of hardwood trees that inhibit the view which if you try to avoid is going to either put you in the field, our yard or one of the trees.

I wouldn't assume that your chickens wouldn't go near a road with a higher speed limit...there's a 55 MPH road not far from me, and I pass a house on my way home from work almost every day where the chickens are RIGHT beside the road, scratching around in the gravel on the side of the road. Makes me SO nervous!
There is a house as you're leaving our town that is on a curve and their chickens are always right next to the road. It's a main road going out of town and it's amazing that none of them have been hit yet.

ladyrsanti- nice broom. Thinking I need one tonight.

Got my witch-y pants on so if I seem a bit grrr, please don't take offense anyone. Just had a heap of stress thrown at me in the last hour and I'm still trying to relax.

Funny, my 11yr old thought it was a broom for riding. It never occurred to him that it might be for *gasp* cleaning.

I don't sell them because this is the first one I've ever made.

I could though. I've got enough sorghum heads for another and a crop in the garden too but I'd need a good stick. I got this one from a fellow Michigander Etsian.

I was shocked this evening when looking in on Millie, the hen we thought had not been successful in hatching the eggs given to her. I'm standing there speaking to the chicken, offering sympathy because her efforts, erratic though they were, would be to no avail. So, when my eyes adjust to the dim light.... A chick is peering at me from under Millies breast. With a feather i could have beeen knocked over, but Hooray, anyway..There are more but I didn't count them. Maybe I can add a pict of her & one.
