I guess I can understand, but really, how much rain water is he collecting running of his roof that is going to be a detriment to the lake and river levels? Just crazy...

Collecting the rainwater off your roof is actually better than letting it go down the drains. It helps reduce the pollutant run-off (CSO) that occurs during a rain event. Thus collecting rainwater helps the lakes and streams.

BTW an inch of rain can give your ~ 600 gallons of water in about an hour.

I wanted to put a rain barrel off my roof, but dad had said why? we don't need it, we have a well. I said, I won't have to run water out of the well. LOL. Needless to say, No rain barrel. I still want one for watering the garden, but... I have to move it first.

You don't need a pump with a rain barrel.

I seem to like the things that are socially unacceptable or mis-understood, rain barrels, composting, wetlands, chickens, etc.

Oh, and my basement freezer defrosted last night. I'm cooking all the meat that was in there and trying not to cry. We had, literally, an entire deer in there that we were going to make into sausage. We might still do that tomorrow since everything was still cold and/or a little frozen still, but I'm sooooo done with today, and I still have to go to work tonight, which I'm dreading. a lot. I hate work right now.

The last time our power went out (a few weeks ago), a ground fault tripped on one switch in the basement and when power came back on, the freezer did not. We lost all our venison and my DH's salmon spawn. So I can relate.

I seem to like those things too. I believe originally some places banned rain barrels because of a fear of standing water and mosquitos. I have 2 and would like another.

my new flashlight came! peeked quickly at my eggs. not looking good. one of them appears to have a REALLY big airsac with a spike in it?? as in, the airsac is at the top, is large, and there is an upsidedown V on one side??? How big will a blood spot get? I have several more that I suspect have blood spots and rings, but the spot is pretty large, and up by the airsac? This is extremely disappointing.

On a good note, I have maybe 4 that I *think* are looking good?? I've decided that I'm going to leave them until Sunday, take one last look, and pitch all the bad looking ones and hope that I get at least a few to hatch. Looks like I may be able to write a post on "how to have at $50 chicken."

Perhaps your homeowners insurance might cover some of the loss, depending on what caused it??

Silly boys......... my DH as some of you know, is currently in Germany. At diner tonight he met some US soldiers on leave. got to drinking with them and you know Boys will always be boys... the Sargent wanted to arm wrestle.... so DH obliged........DH took him down (3 times)

! So, not to be out done, the rest of them got in line taking turns with arm wrestling my DH.... he took them all........ got them more drunk, Walked ..er... carried the Sargent back to his room and the other soldiers walked my DH back to his hotel. He was giddy as a school boy calling to "brag" about his adventures. LOL! Boys!

He claims they weren't going easy on the "old guy"... I just laughed...

True enough. Water that percolates through the soil gets filtered and cleaned of contaminants.
A rain event can overwhelm the sewers systems and bypass this natural system. Take into account all of the pavement around (impermeable surfaces), the run off goes straight to the water shed. Even if you only store a bit for a little while it helps the water shed.
The added bonus is you get water free of the treatments that the governments add and it is free.
