Meet, Mike and Ike!

They're 8 mo old.

They were such a hoot running around. They're a little unsure about the dogs... dogs want to play a bit too rough so we'll have to work with them a bit.

I think they may have a little mineral deficiency (thanks stacykins) their coats have a rusty color near the back legs. I know the people who had them, had no hay or minerals for them. They got hay last night, but I'll pick up all the other stuff today.

So other than that they are pretty friendly. I kept them in the dog run over night till I can get their "shelter" set up. Today, we'll see whats left of the yard when we get home. Luckily we don't have much in the line of plants in the back yard, but, who knows what kind of mischief trouble they'll find.

Yea, early copper deficiency is really easy to spot on dark haired goats. They start turning a bit rusty, because a copper containing enzyme is required to produce melanin. But if they had no mineral access, than that is a really easy fix! They'll probably chow through minerals like no tomorrow for a little while, and then once their levels are good, only need to nibble here or there.

No action in the incubator yet today. I'm having a horrible time getting my humidity over 52% though. So far I've filled both of the places in the tray that the incubator comes with, AND added 2 babyfood jars with a sponge cut in half, so each jar has half a sponge. AND I put another WHOLE sponge under one of the vent holes so I can add water that way without opening the lid. The babyfood jars dried out in 36 hours. Bone. Dry. I don't get it!

Did you tape the edges shut?

my thoughts are she is more concerned with her social life than her daughter.

Gladahme, I'm sorry. What do you think was wrong? She was sneezing, is that right?

Yeah, she was sneezing. When she was about a week old she sneezed a lot, along with being lethargic, fluffing up a lot, and had labored breathing. I didn't notice a lot of the other symptoms yesterday, but she was sitting off to the side by herself more than usual. I'm guessing it was just a chronic respitory issue, and maybe its lungs filled with fluid or something? I dunno. Either way, I don't have to worry about her health anymore. (Just have to worry about the other 12....well, 13 I guess with the hatchling.)

I did. I was naughty and opened the lid briefly to re-fill the jars and re-wet the sponges last night. And I've made sure to be adding water to the tray regularly as well. It's holding steady at around 53% now, and the chick that hatched out this morning didn't have any sticky-membrane issues that I could see.

How long is a hen usually broody? I have asked this question and bunch on BYC and no one answers for me, do I stink?

Use that search bar that appears above the threads. I was asking a lot of basic questions in the start, and when I wasn't getting answers I tried that out. Turns out 40 other people asked the question before me, and folks were probably just getting tired of answering.

I've never had a broody (or a hen old enough to lay eggs yet!) but if you're not letting her sit on eggs, you should try to break her of it (I've seen that recommended often since being broody can be hard on their overall condition). I would guess up to 3 weeks becuase that's what the incubation period is, but it could be less since I've seen posts where peoples' boodies have quit part-way through sitting on eggs.

does any one freeze broccoli or cauliflower? I went on line and they said to boil for 3 min. I did that but it is now eating soft and I am sure if I freeze it will be mushy when thawed and warmed. isn't 3 min. a bit long. said to boil water add cauliflower bring to boil and boil 3 min???

sorry Greenmimamma, I have had a broody stay broody for 42 days. till she finally had a chick hatch. It depends on how determined she is. once the chicks hatch however she will only sit 1 or 2 days after the first one hatch's maybe longer if she is in a confined place with her chicks. but by 2 days the 1st chick starts to run around and needs attention
