We need a new roof on our coop and we are getting crazy high estimates, it's so frustrating because we can do it, we just don't have the time or daylight hours to do it, it's so annoying. Hmmm first world problems I know.

It was so much easier before all of my friends had 5 or 6 kids, we could all get together and knock out a project pretty quick.

I found out my friends hens aren't even banty's she gave me some eggs because we are so low and her eggs were half the size of mine, she said they are 5yo and not banty's one was even a RIR which is what I have, a mystery for sure

So please send some good weather vibes, since we might be roofing on Sat.

We only have a few close friends, but they all have lots of kids....we just get them all together and let them play while we work! lol! Good luck, I am hoping to get our shingled roof finished tomorrow or this weekend, and it has the trim and tar paper done already! You're making me wonder if it's going to take way longer than I was thinking...

Ugh... One of my ditzy Wyandottes got tangled in flypaper from the barn. The SLW's are nearly impossible to catch but once I caught up to her I laid her across my lap and carefully unstuck her from it. It was deep in her butt feathers, you know, the fluffiest ones.

Oy! What a mess! Let that be a lesson to me. Don't keep flypaper where the chickens can fly into it. This particular one was hanging from the top of a high window but still, she got up there somehow. It would have been really amusing to find her hanging in the window by the flypaper though.

I TOTALLY pictured a tangled up chicken slowly spinning the way fly paper does and letting out a periodic "cluck" lol

Sooo we got the run finished today, but at first no one wanted to go outside...once I started kicking them out though, they got the idea and the rest headed out on their own, got the coop all cleaned up and added some fresh bedding, got home from cheer and all the chickens and ducks were sleeping...well, when hubby got home my EE was still asleep in the corner...she didn't quite appear to be sleeping but she seemed fine...hubby asked what she was doing and I said I wasn't sure...well, she got up to come in, and BAM she had left me an egg!

Glad, is she eating good? Does her crop feel full of food, or only water? Some chicks don't catch on right away, or are too timid to battle their way to the food, or do but not enough for their growth.

If her crop is not full, you could take spoons and crush the feed, and take warm water and make a soft paste with it. (Drinkable, but not too runny) Put this in a clean milk cap, and dip her beak in. If it is the feed, not the flora, you could also add a pinch of sugar to this to give her energy and make the food more tempting.

Unleeees it is constipation, that gives runny poo too. Feel along the bottom of her "belly", at the bottom between that and the vent. Is there a bulge?

Oooooh! Thank you for the suggestion! I've been searching like made and not coming up with anything. She's 4wks old, and *seems* alright other than the poop, but maybe she's eating just enough to get by? I'm going to try the yogurt again today, and I'll check her crop and belly while I'm down there.

Morning all, allergies are making me nuts today (Mold, mildew going wild after all the rain).

Well I thought about that, it would actually look really cool with this particular building, do they sell a special piece for the ridge vent?

I've never put up metal, I know DH has done the expensive steel roofs, but don't know about the corugated metal, that is the kind you are talking about right?

I have a metal roof. The only thing a bit different is you are going to want something on the inside to cover the metal otherwise you have a big condensation problem in the winter or cooler months.

Menards and HD, Lowes, etc should sell ribbed metal roofing in nominal lengths (8, 10, 12ft, and so on) so unless you have the tools to trim pieces down, that size HAS to work for what you're doing. They DO make something to vent the ridge.....it's a roll of what looks kind of like black brillo pad, about a foot wide. You just put that under your ridge cap and TADA! It vents!


My poor little chickie still has liquid poop. I had to give her another bath tonight. Poor thing barely tries to run away when I open the brooder to take her out, even though the others are FREAKING OUT as soon as I touch the lid. I picked up some yogurt in hopes that it's just a gut flora thing, or she only gets a few more weeks before getting culled. That stinks especially since I'm pretty sure it IS a she and one of the others (out of the 3) is REALLY looking like it's going to be a boy.

I think she was asking about metal roofing. though it may work, I would worry that it would also get clogged with chicken dander/dust etc over time. If she goes with asphalt shingles, I would use the ridged vent and remove the fibrous filter. (it's just made to keep bugs out).. If she goes with metal, the stores will have a rigid roof cap made of the same metal with the corrugated roofing materials. When figuring out how much you need, remember to take into account the overlap on the sides, and if your roof is longer, over lap the length as well. You can use a metal cutting blade in a circular saw to cut the roof to the lengths you need. Please wear hearing and eye protection when cutting and gloves while handling the metal as the edges can be sharp!. We use the screws with rubber washer vs the nails, I think they hold better.

My suggestion was just based on what I have been told, which could absolutely be wrong. When we were doing our roof the people at menards had NO idea what to suggest for a vented ridge on a metal roof. We used the solid, non-vented strips under our ridge and but big vents in the gable ends, as well as the overhang.

For that use I would say great idea! the stuff helps keeps bugs out, but in a chicken coop where there is a heavy dust load, I wouldn't use it.

Ok, so not a "baby" baby. You can hand feed your crumbles or pellets then, give her some cooked egg yolk. That will give her a boost!
Is the poop yellow, or have blood in it? Just Watery? Any signs of runny noses or anything? Just covering the bases.
