Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

There is a better way and it is easier.

Layer 6-7 sheets of overlapping newspaper on the bed and cover with mulch, soil, leaves or straw or coop bedding. Let it sit like that over winter and it will smother all the weeds without harming the soil organisms or adding poison to the ground.

Round-Up has a half-life that lingers in the soil for months and roto-tilling re-distrbutes the seed bank. I only roto-till if I can get new plant material in the ground right away to out compete the weeds and keep up with manual maintenance for the immediate time afterwards.

Just my un-solicited advice.

Thanks Raz, I really was hoping some one would have a better Idea, fortunately I don't have the $$ to buy round up right now any how, bought paint for the front room and hallway yesterday, 3 gallons needed that and some scratch from the feed store in Lowell ( they are closing as of this Fri) That pretty much cleaned me out till the 1st of the month.
Hated being inside all day yesterday but got the painting done all but 1 wall which I am painting that this AM a contrasting collar. bought the paint with primer and it looks like I may not need a second coat so I have a gallon left over for another room (Oh goody, did I mention I hate to paint).......maybe I can get out and work on the garden some today will need to weed whack first as the weeds are 4ft. tall, may use some round up around the area later .we have 12 acres of weeds feeding the garden. ,

have been tossing seed on 1/2 of the run trying to get the weeds out of there. (chicken tilling) thought I would try growing rye grass back there, may be tough enough to hold??

Have a great day!!!

I thought I would be smart last year so instead of using chemicals, we mounded all our grass clippings over our veggie gardens. But NOW we have a huge vole overpopulation since apparently they were partying all winter and having lots of babies under all that grass mulch. It is a huge area so I can't bury a fence or try to manually keep them out. Any ideas on how to get rid of them? Sometimes they get stuck in our netting and die, but other than that all I see of them is the tunnels they burrow under our plants and bites out of everything.

Walking the dogs in the woods this morning I was greeted with some noise up ahead of me. I yelled out to the dogs "are you causing trouble?" Next think I know a 6 point buck is charging down the trail right at me. Fortunately he veered right with about 30 feet to go. Then I see Ziggy bounding out of the woods after him. He didn't chase him long. Silly dog. His beagle-sized legs are way too short to keep up. Sure glad I'm on my own land though, I know how that can p.o. some people. Small buck anyway, I wouldn't have shot him.

Sure was a surprise though.

Question for you guys, have you come across any dead deer along water? We've got a pretty bad outbreak of EHD this year with the deer population. If you do find them contact the DNR to let them know. http://www.michigandnr.com/diseasedwildlifereporting/disease_obsreport.asp

I'll be going out this weekend to check my stands... and will check along the creeks to see if I may as well just stay home this year.
Apparently we have the same problem near us, however, the herd on, and around, my property seem healthy enough. Too healthy and need to be thinned. I think every doe had twins. I have a small group that consists of does, fawns, and two recently driven away yearlings. I've not heard of any reports near me of EHD and I believe it's mostly south and east of here.

BTW, your old doe Trixe had her first batch of mixed FG/NZ. 7 altogether.

I have what I believe to be a pair of lavender orpingtons. They are only about 2 months now, but if you are willing to wait until they mature, you are more than welcome to some hatching eggs.

Should be working today, but it has been so slow I was told not to come in today. It's going to be a small paycheck this week. Thinking I need to look around for either a second job or a different job. With the loss of DH's income, just can't afford my hours cut now. On top of that, my boots totally died yesterday, the sole peeled back halfway down. Had DMIL buy some shoe goo to hopefully extend their life until I can buy some new ones.

On the bright side, DH's cellulitis was only in the starting stages, so a whole bunch of antibiotics daily should take care of it and hopefully (fingers crossed) not delay surgery next week.

Wow that must have been a surprise!!!

Does anyone remember who I got the blue orpingtons from? At the get together?

Right now I am in the ER with my daughter who just had the baby she has some spinal fluid leaking and it is giving her the worst headaches. They are going to do a blood patch, I sure hope this works.
