Well I think all my Welsh Harlequins are drakes...anybody interested in a few? I have 3 available, I am going to keep one and try for hens in the spring. They are just over 6 weeks old.

Too bad you are 3 hours from me... I wouldn't mind one, but going to get them and coming back would be a 6 hour round trip not including transferring him to a cage in my car...

It must be a crowing pullet. Confusing as there have been no eggs yet. It does not act like a male-no wing dropping, dancing, etc, but is still relatively young.

Catray - I have had hens mimic crowing. My little d'uccle would call us from inside the coop if we were late in letting the hens out. You should be able to tell more within the month as your hen will either begin laying or take on more rooster characteristics.

I had a barred rock hen who would give a fair imitation, but this one is really good!

I have a five month old Seabright "pullet". I do not know much about this breed, at all. Looks like a pullet, small dark, greyish comb, no wattles to speak of, but started crowing today. A lot. lol. Do the comb and wattles come in later than other breeds? Any input would be welcome. Will try to get a picture, later. Thanks!

I have a 1 1/2yr old sebright pullet and she is known to crow from time to time especially if kept from any roosters. Her comb was practically non-existent for the longest time. I can't remember when she started laying eggs, but it was well after my standards did. I also had a sebright roo at one time and he developed real quick with a big red comb and was crowing before he was supposed to.

Wake up Michigan! High wind advisory today. Sandy's coming. Clouds in the east. Still clear to the west though here in Kent Co. The new rolling barn doors I built in the spring got a tethering today. They were previously held in place by a temporary cinder block but the doors kept pushing the block out with our usual winds so this morning they got an industrial hook and eye treatment. Still need some plexi on the windows though to cut down the drafts. I'm going into town for some chicky feed so maybe I'll swing 'round the hardware too. Chickens gave us 8 eggs yesterday so not really slowing down yet. Of course we'd been having some nice sunny days so maybe this storm will cut numbers a bit. Supposed to see some flakes on Tuesday (won't say the s-word) but it won't be the first of the season and no accumulation I guess. Just hoping the weather clears a bit for trick-or-treating on Wed. night.

I don't want to wake up. It's grey and gloomy and cold and yucky. Can I go back to bed?
Oh right, I have check and feed the chickens, let the dogs out, stoke the fire and other little chores.

And I have to prepare some more material for the Ag Comm. meeting on Wednesday.

My son took these pictures of the new chicks yesterday.
I think he did a pretty good job.



Mama looks pretty mad here, but she has been a very good broody.
She has let me do whatever I wanted/needed the whole time she has been on the nest and with the chicks.
Occasionally a little peck or some grumbling, but otherwise nothing.

So I spent part of the weekend removing the old nest boxes (Dr. Seuss style) and putting in new, modern, two-level boxes (TV stand style). First customer:

OK - not thrilled, but I'll give it a shot (she gave the wooden egg several suspicious pecks)


So far all eggs have been layed in the new boxes - Yay!
