I also read that some people say cashmere is shaved from the goats belly when it is not... Belly hair is pretty useless.
PETAs website states that it is (Not that I am on PETAs website)
Which makes me wonder what else is misinformation on their site...

Hah, yea, not shaved from their bellies, comes from their entire body. The finest cashmere is plucked from the goat when the goat naturally begins to shed. If a cashmere goat is sheared, you get more fiber. But you also get a lot of guard hairs, lowering the fiver quality by a lot.

They were WAY off then... that makes me angry... I am sure there are bad people out there doing bad things, but I know this is not the norm.

Am I correct in assuming that cashmere goats don't have to be shaved? All you would need to do is brush, or pluck them real often when they shed?
Why is being shave considered such a bad thing, I had a poodle that got shave every summer, and he was so proud of himself afterwards.

Your assumption is correct! They naturally shed their fiber. Kinda like a dog shedding, hah.

I don't think the shaving part is so bad... I think PETA is upset because "they" shave them at the wrong time of year or breed for standards and kill the ones that don't meet the standards.
I dunno...
I have seen sheep that are practically begging to be shaved in the spring because they are so hot! And I have shaved many dogs that are super excited to have been groomed!

I know we are not really supposed to talk about PETA here, because it turns into a flamefest. But the basis of PETA's beliefs is that animals, even ones used humanely for fiber, are 'slaves'. PETA, if they had their way, would want no domesticated animals in the world, even if none were eaten or abused. So they would feel that shearing an animal as a very bad, though they think just keeping the animal is bad.



This is Shrek. A merino sheep who avoided being shorn for SIX YEARS. He managed to hide during shearing time. I bet he was relieved when all that fleece was finally removed after he was caught!
