Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Aye, why get a mini zebu for milk when you can get a pair of goats for a lot less? My goats (with the exception of the newest who has not yet figured out I am the giver of treats and affection) act just like dogs with hooves!

Some folks like the taste of cow milk over goat milk, or they just prefer working with cows more than goats. It could also be a matter of having allergies to goats and/or goat milk.

ladyrsanti- would you be willing to share you bagel recipe??? I have always wanted to try making them :)
I too would be careful with the lights. I know that we don't like to think of our birds getting chilled but I am sure that they are doing ok. I also have horses and don't bother to blanket them unless we get a really nasty storm. Maybe I am just mean though

I'd love the recipe too!

I don't think you're mean for not covering your horses, they cannot regulate their own body heat properly with the blanket.

Those look yummy!

I could have had a disaster in my coop once, the heat lamp was plenty secure, but the glass of the bulb broke at the base, But it stayed lit, Luckily I had the grate for the light in place so it held the bulb and kept it from falling on the birds or on the straw... I surely would have had a fire. So, I will NEVER put a light in my coop. All my birds have survived the last 2 winters just fine without it!
Really? We don't have to put a light or heat lamp for them? Some say you do and some don't. How bout their combs? Will they freeze?
Kimmie

More LIKELY to freeze with a light! They are all warm and then they go out into the run and get cold; that bit of moisture that forms on their combs then can freeze..... Don't always happen, but it is the odds. You can vasaline their combs every few days to prevent frostbite if you are worried, too.

I had a light accident this time around, too.
Luckily for me i use sand in my brooder! Somehow the light got loose and fell into the sand. It was tipped on it's side, so the chicks (6 mo) could still stay somewhat warm, but had they been younger, not-as-smart chicks, they could have been burned badly.............. And had i used woodchips in the brooder............gives me chills.

Glad to know you understand. There are so many in the horse world that don't get it. You wouldn't believe the debates to be had LOL, anyway I am getting excited about having birds with my horses. Could make for some interesting pics : )

There is no need for lights or auxiliary heat. They will be better off without it as long as your coop is dry, draft free and has good ventilation. Chickens have survived for thousands of years before lights and heaters.

If you follow Chicken Whisperer on FB, he has reported four (4) fatal coop fires so far this fall from faulty lights/heaters in the coop.

Anyone, What is this chicklet ? I think it's about 6 wks old. got the egg from RBAHMER. Has five toes and feathers on shanks. Take a guess. I can't find one like it in "breeds". Thanks. Bob
Bob - It's suppose to have feathered shanks because it is a Marans and ....I told you before you got the eggs there were Silkie Roos in that pen. Didn't think the Marans roo would let them do anything but apparently was wrong. It is a Silkie/Marans mix. Sorry

Apparently my chickens haven't read the part that says they are supposed to stop laying at the days get shorter. I'm averaging 1 more egg per day than I did last month. It seems like everyone is still producing. All except my lone BLA.
I'm afraid that she is lonely since the duck flew south. As the only bantam, she is either ignored or bullied. So I think I should offer her to someone who has banties...or try to find another bantam girl for her.

Any offers?
