Why is it that when a chicken is lost, I feel as though I failed...my EE hen, Amelia. RIP

I just got back from the other side of the state. Took a 5 hour trip today and picked up a pair of lavender Orps and a Coronation Sussex hen. Here's a picture of the Coro hen and the lavender roo.

Oh they are pretty!

Sorry you lost one Native, but I agree, it sure does. But I think that makes you a better tender of them. If you didn't care about losing one, you wouldn't care about the conditions.

Sarah, are those the two I saw Wednesday? Boy they sure are pretty.

I had Pat out in the grass again tonight for a while. All of the big birds were in the coop so I set him in the grass and went and filled feeders and waterers and set the lamp over the waterer to keep it from freezing. I won't be out there until noon tomorrow, and they'll be up and running around the run at sun up. I love my roofed run... Still need to put the wood support in that was suggested. That will be a this week project after pay day. I only do things to the coops when its double pay week. Oh, anyway, I set Pat in the middle of the front yard and watched him for a bit, then walked away. By the time I got back to the front yard, he had finally managed to get up the house. It really does look as if he feet are getting caugh in his own feathers, and then he'll back up a bit and start going forward again. He actually tripped himself poor guy. I am thinking of trimming them a bit and then letting them grow back out come early spring so that he'll be set for Jace to use for cloverbud. The only chicken that is interested in being nice to him is my pretty girl Carmel. She is so sweet and passive anyway, so he'll at least have company till he grows his big boy pants. She sits next to him on the other side of the divide.

Daron... Now that your birthday is over... And you have another lovely day... Are you happy? Cuz you are now half way up the hill.. In 24-25 years, you will be at the top, and then it'll be down from there....
According to that line of thinking I am over the hill, however, I'd rather be over the hill than under it.

Yep, those are the two that were in the bin in my basement next to Pat. They look mostly black from above, but under the black they are covered with white-tipped mottled pin-feathers that are growing in. Can't wait to see their colors changing...

His feathers are so lovely, but I think I personally would probably chop them shorter if he doesn't get better soon. Maybe he'll do better though after he builds up some muscles? I think he was probably kept in a small cage, where that might have been difficult for him to make progress with any impairments he might have. The 8 month old blue mottled pullet Bluebell I got from the same breeder is a healthy little fattie compared to him, and holds her own pretty well. My partridge silkie Priscilla does not like her so Bluebull stuffs her head under the butts of my other two silkies to escape her pecks. All the other chickens I have had before would just run away from the aggressor, so I am enjoying this tactic!

What sorts of things will he do with him for the Cloverbud program? Hoping my daughter will want to get involved with 4H in a few years so I can have a little chicken-showing buddy, but only time will tell if she will take an interest. She already told me that when she grows up, she wants to make recycled wool baby pants like me, haha. I'm sure THAT will change when when she hits the teen years...

If anyone is interested in 2 male neutered goats, 8 months old, they are available at rescueme.org
Look under 'farm animals' 'michigan'
The person who has them is willing to make a donation for their care to a loving farm home.

Location is Macomb County.

Thought I would share how I spent my Friday night: bathing chickens - Dragon (short for Snapdragon) and Ivy. Thank goodness I already have a husband who can't be scared off... I am amazed by how much they both love the blow dryer! I think between the Sevin, Ivermectin and two baths, the mites are gone.  I will probably dust their fresh bedding with Sevin one more time before adding them to our other chickens in the main coop. I do NOT want any mites in our coop, but I can't leave them in their rubbermaid tote home while we are gone for Thanksgiving.

I am so glad I'm not the only one who gives my girls baths and blow dries them! My big girl loves it. Sits in front of the wood burner and lounges while I blow her dry. :)
