We recently moved from Oregon back to our Michigan roots. We were born and raised here, so came back to be closer to family after adding our son to our family last year.

Anywho.. we had 7 chickens in Oregon that we gave to our neighbor when we moved. We had a very small property and had to keep our chicks in a coop/run due to city ordinances. The property we bought here in Michigan is a little over .50 acre, and outside the city. Once we got settled, we started back into the chicken world. We just hatched our very first eggs ever and had a 100% hatch rate and are very excited. Granted there were only 4 eggs that hatch, we have more in the incubator waiting. Needless to say, I think we are addicted.

Our plans were to open a dog kennel once we got relocated.... I think those plans have changed!!

Can I use Bag Balm instead of Vaseline on my girl's combs and wattles? I've got a large tin of Bag Balm and I'd wouldn't want to purchase Vaseline if the Bag Balm would work. It has a petrolatum/lanolin base with 0.3% hydroxy quinoline sulfate (whatever that is). You can use it on animals and people. I'm wondering if it can also be used to help prevent frostbite.

Idk, but i think so? If it repels water.......... opa had something he used that wasn't vasaline, too

Just so you know, vasaline is supposed to be re-applied, i didn't know that...........i have seen it recommended every few days to a week apart............. I did it off and on through the winter, but i have EE's, so pea combs and no wattles. I have to worry about frozen beards, though! Poor babies

I agree. It makes me a bit nervous when I'm working at this time of year especially when you get out of the truck to deliver something and you immediately hear a gunshot. Makes me flinch every time. I hate that.

Bag balm would work just fine for that purpose! Vaseline is just petroleum jelly, and petrolatum is another name for it. It is thick and won't get worn off the chicken's comb too easily. Hydroxyquinoline sulfate is just an antiseptic. The stuff sure is nice. I actually have a thick coating on my wrist right now. I burned myself pulling pan of biscuits from the oven, and it really does help soothe and heal wounds.

Honey works wonders on burns. Even better than Bag Balm, in my biased pro-bee opinion.
