Rich, I think I'd be a little leary of the ice as well. I haven't even been out this year. A few years ago I sold my 2 man Fish Trap when I bought a 6x8' shanty. Still can't figure out why I sold it. It wasn't eating or drinking in my storage room and it sure was easy to use. I used to ice fish alot but the last couple of years I haven't even gone out. I went through the ice in the Saginaw River where someone had cut a man sized hole and not marked it. It had snowed the night before and you could see any of the old holes. Fortunately I was carrying my p;ower auger over my shoulder and that bridged the hole. I was in the main channel where the water was 30' deep. The current in the river was flowing fast enough that had I lost my grasp on the auger I would have gone completely under and never would have been able to regain the hole.

Scary. Fortunately I have never gone through the ice (knock wood). Close once when I was a kid out skating.
I was out the other day and found two seperate layers with about an inch of water between them. The top layer was solid but milky and not very good ice. Lower layer was about 3 inches thick, clear and hard. I fear this weather lately will honeycomb that top layer so I will stay off till we start getting some serious prolonged cold temps. Even then I check every few feet with a spud.

I considered flooding my basement, stocking it and cutting a hole in the living room floor but that would void my homeowners policy.

Might piss off the wife and then you would be wishing you went through the ice!!!

Well here was my first attempt at a no sew saddle for my chicken. She was healing from the cut in her side from the rooster, but it got cut back open, so I cleaned her wound up and made her a saddle.

Thanks Opa.

Does anyone else have really dirty looking chickens too right now?Iknow it will get worse I am sure once spring thaw actually hits, but bag balm plus chicken combs equals dirty chickens.

I think mine are starting to molt?

They are looking a little scruffy and I took the flaslight out with me tonight to check them for lice or mites. I thankfully didn't see anything of the sort, however I have to remember to ask DH not to put the perches up so high.
