I've been in search of winter layers since I've had chickend. What are your mutt crosses that lay so well?

I hatched a bunch of Jersey Giant over NHR's last spring, and the seller assured me they are awesome layers, and lay all through winter. NOT!

The only ones that have laid consistently for me through winter are two Isa Brown pullets and an EE.

Daycare Mom- wont that be awesome!

Wynette- my mutts are Black Australorp X EE, i believe. they lay brown and green eggs. also have one Aussie X some bantam something. she lays a rosey cream egg. and one that i have NO idea, except some kind of bantam mutt. she kicks em out like nobody's business!

oh gosh, i'll try to remember everybody!

barred rocks, brown leghorns, australorp, delewares, EE's, RIR's, RIR prod's, Red sex links, Black sex links, and a New Hampshire Red. i think that's everyone!

yes, the colors and personalities are so fun. all so different!

WOW! That's quite a variety - how fun!!

I've only got a few that haven't started laying that I hatched last year; they ought to start soon. Then, I have some chicks in my basement that hopefully will start in June. It's going to be a long few months waiting!!

i have a bunch in the garage in brooders also.

BR's, BO's, Delewares, EE's, RIR prod's, BA's, Phoenix X's, Houdan X's and some Deleware X Leghorns. (i think there are 69 out there!)

28 Leghorn eggs in the bator with one from each of my mutt girls. (looks like they are all developing except one!)

yikes a rama!

that may be me!

13 of the 25 EE's are sold, pending pick up.

4 of the others are sold and being delivered next Sunday.
4 POL Barred Rocks are traded and being delivered next Sunday.
1 POL Barred Rock is probably being traded to CATRAY44 as soon as we get the details down.

a couple that we know through the school wants some of the Leghorns that hatch. they would like to trade for either pork or veggies.

so, it's really benefiting our family in many ways. and it gives me something i can do since i cannot work because of the seizures i have. it helps to have a goal for myself everyday. and we love it! our kids are learning so much and having a good time while learning.

Hey all glad I am not the only one with the hatching bug. I have the 55 in the bator and I am planning on calling today for the Buff orp eggs from down state, the parents were imported as chicks from England. Can't wait.

Cold up here at least if it was snowing we wouldn't have such cold man what a rotten trade off.

I belive it is getting colder out there. We spent the day getting all the spoiled animals at the wildlife rehab set up with good warm areas to go into the next few days when this bitter cold hits running extra heat lamps covering the sides of there pens so they can go in there under the heat lamps with out the wind hitting them. SPOILED ROTTEN
