Wonder what she would say if that happened to their pet dog or cat?!?!?

Lordy I would be flaming hot mad. Good thing I wasn't there. Kids have skinny necks that are easy to wrap yer fingers around.
Sorry about the loss of your frizzle.

I'm steamin' but not seeing it actually happen I hate to throw accusations around, my gut is telling me the little psychopath can stay home. I find it absolutely amazing that for the years that I've been doing this I have never had a child injure an adult bird or a chick, it seems that most children inherently understand the delicacy of life, even kids that I would never thought they could be gentle are, but this little girls comes back into my life and wham, dead frizzle. And what really gets me is the ease with which she can shake it off. I was ranting, my daughter was sobbing and she thought we could run right out to the local Pet Supplies Plus and pick up a new one!

My name is Kelly and as you can see from my username I don't actually have any chickens yet. I am finishing up my research and getting my husband motivated to build me a coop or shell out the money for a pre-built one. I live in a residential neighborhood that borders a rural community (Richland). I looked through my township ordinances and there is nothing forbidding chickens (though fowl is mentioned in the nuisance noise ordinance). I want a small flock and have a few questions. I am also going to post these questions in the appropriate places but figured it wouldn't hurt to put them here to.

1. Did you talk to your neighbors prior to getting you chickens? If so, how did you ease their concerns?

2. Breed recommendations --- I only want 3-4 chickens and I prefer them on the small side. Not sure I want true bantam breeds though because I want average size eggs.

3. How are chickens around water. We have a pool in our yard and wasn't sure if that was a concern.

4. If you have dogs, did they get used to the chickens. I have a large mutt who is a big baby and will probably be afraid of the chickens, and a pomachi who is the alpha. Chihuahuas aren't prey focused as far as I know but I am no expert.

Thanks for any feedback!

Wylie,
I just looked at the weather and it says that it is only going down to 50. Hopefully your chick has found a warm snuggly place to sleep tonight! They will be knocking on your door looking for breakfast in the morning!

I am so sorry, Seven!!! It makes me so mad when adults don't respect your things and just let their kids do what they want when at your house. I have already taken to locking our coop and run and have to carry a key with me because of kids trying to get into see the chickens. They have been told the rules and yet their parents don't care. They aren't their pets. Things sure would be different then.

I can only imagine what your poor daughter feels tonight and it breaks my heart! Hugs to both of you!!

Good Morning Everyone!!!
Thought I would catch up with everyone this morning and say Hi!!
sevenchickens: So sorry for your little one.
wyliefarms: Hope the chick is okay this morning.
maybekeeper: We are in a rural area so I did not talk to my neighbors first. I have an inground pool and have no problems with my chickens going near it. As far as dogs go, mine have been taught to leave the birds alone. I know everyone is not that lucky, but no problems here. Two of my dogs are bird hunting dogs, they just had to be taught not to hunt my birds.
I am still struggling with this chicken addiction. Haven't taken the time to try and sell any yet. Not sure which to get rid of. I am forbidding myself from buying anymore, so then I go and set 36 eggs on Friday.

My DH has been busy working on dividing up my barn for breeding pens, only a couple outside runs left. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be enough space to get all the babies out of the brooder. He is going to kill me!
I hope everyone has a great day, looks like it will be another nice one!!
