My pullets are about the same age. I got them from a nice hatchery by Birch Run. I have two Aracauna's (probably just EEs), two SLW, one SLW, and a BR. So come Novemberish I should have a pretty egg basket. Until then I'm getting three eggs a day (at best) from my EEs. Very disappointing. The only thing that's kept me from going batty is that my two Pekins just started laying. Those eggs are just weird BTW. I'm looking for more of those too btw! When you start hatching sussexssss in the spring let me know! I def want some of those!

I hope I have some better luck at the auction this Saturday.

I'll definately post on here once I start hatching. I'm getting crap for eggs right now but I know they'll start laying at some point!

Maybe we can figure something out for swapping for some of those duck eggs in exchange for some chickies!

I LOVE home made noodles out of duck eggs and would also like to hatch some out for my daughter to play with! She loves swimming with the ducklings!

I hope I'm not the only one whose getting shafted in the egg laying department. I have eight (supposedly) laying hens, on good days I get three a day. I just started separating them to see whose laying, how often and who isn't. What can I do with an old hen who isn't producing?

I only get 1-2 eggs out of 3 supposedly good laying hens. My RIR is still young but I'm hoping. Maybe I'll get some action now that I have the 2 new boys. Although so far the girls seem to really dislike them. Ugh! I'll give them another couple weeks then I might separate them as well!

I still need a few more layers. Doubtful I'll find any anytime soon!

My pullets are laying really well but the rest of my hens are not. I think it is the hot weather. I also think that a few of them are molting.

Chickens are way more complicated than I ever could have imagined! They are also more fun though.

I've been keeping track of how many eggs I've gotten since January 1st from the 24 layers and as of yesterday the total is 2546. That works out to just over 11 eggs per day so evidently I still have some slackers. I have had as many as 6 broody hens at one time and that definitely cuts into egg production. Lately they have been alternating between 12 one day and 18 the next. I do expect to see production slack off as the number of loose feathers blowing around increases.

As irritating as they are I usually just ignore them. I have had some that have stayed broody for well over a month. I've thought about putting them to work hatching eggs but that results in chicks, and more chicks will make an even larger increase in the out of control chicken fever.

I'm about twenty mins away from Howell and can come out whenever!!! Just so you know!!

Good news!! I just put my 3 call ducklings (23 days old) in the chicken run for the first time. We have everything from bantys to the two big roosters we got yesterday. The biggest troublemaker was NOT a chicken, but the biggest of the 3 ducklings!

Picture001.jpg

For the first 2 or 3 minutes they were a bit dazed and couldn't figure out why I was on the other side of the fence

Picture002-1.jpg

All the other chickens stopped what they were doing to look and see what was put in their run

Picture003.jpg

The smallest of the 3 didn't seem bothered even by the really big chickens

Picture004-1.jpg

The biggest one later took on one of the silkies who kept trying to get to the other two

So day 1 was successful! I figure if I let them in there for a little bit every day they can all get used to each other and the ducklings can get some exercise!
