Huston's Happy Hens :

Hey Gang:

Bro in Alaska is JUST getting into chickens...bought some from a lady there in Homer...he has one whose crop is getting larger and she's not laying and he's about ready to butcher her...my thought is sour crop...proper remedy is to turn upside down and massage crop and she'll expel the problem - right??? thanks!

sour crop will be smuchy, not hard. But yes flip her over and massage the crop. Be careful on letting her get breaks to breath. Amazing how much I got out of a bantam once.

I want to get into showing chickens. I look at my "Pretty Boy" (Serama) and wonder if he'd be any good. I used to show for 4H when I was younger and haven't done any kind of shows since the Persian cats I had and retired horses.

How do you get into that?

Check out www.fowlfest.org It is a poultry show in Frankenmuth October 9-10. For kids and adults. Lots of birds for sale too.

DH thinks that our rooster is the cause of lower egg production. He is certainly not badgering the ladies all day and unless he's on a roll I would say that he's just "present". I've never read about having a rooster being the culprit of lower egg production, but would appreciate input if there are any thoughts out there. Thanks!

Morning!

Well last night while talking with Keyt about the pair of Buffs I go outside to put the roo away and he's GONE. He never leaves the coop area but has to be on the outside so he doesn't hurt my birds...and he always waits for me to come out and put him in the rabbit coop for the night. I had been outside maybe an hour earlier and he was out there.

My husband got home and we looked all over the yard and called for him, saw no sign of feathers and couldn't find him anywhere. It was getting really dark so I told my husband we'd better just go inside cause if he's sleeping somewhere he's not going to wake up. I expected to wake up this morning and find him out by the coop crowing his head off like normal, but nope.

I'm going to search the yard again for signs of him being grabbed up by something but he was a big roo...I can't imagine something grabbing him up or at least not without a struggle. I hate not knowing what happened to him.
Keyt, looks like you'll just get a hen and not have to deal with the roo!

Wow, that is odd!! He's HUGE, I can't imagine any predator taking him either! I really thought he would show up this morning too! Well, I definitely want the female, but you said you only wanted to let the female go to get rid of the roo, right? Although I really need more females, it's up to you if you don't want to anymore.

It's kinda sad really, that roo is gorgeous too!

Yeah, I'm not sure where that roo went...I'm almost wondering if since it was getting dark and I hadn't come out to put him in his hutch if he maybe wandered around (cause he normally comes looking for me when it starts getting dark) and went up by the road and got picked up by someone. I don't mind if someone picked him up because the whole goal was to find him a new home, but it bothers me that I don't know.

I'm still going to bring you the hen though and I'll give you a call when I'm heading into town!

Nancy, having roos didn't slow my girls egg production down. I can't imagine why your girls are not producing! Can you separate them and see who is laying and who isn't? It's just a head scratcher, that's for sure.

Yeah, being picked up by someone makes more sense because he was so huge and you didn't see feathers so I can't imagine him being taken by a predator. It's still odd! Well, I'm always around except today, tomorrow and weds between 4 and 830-ish. I'm excited!!
