With our 2 recent deaths I'm now freaked out! I know the first was definitely due to prolapse but I'm not sure of the second. She was the only green layer we had left and this morning I found a very bloody, green frozen egg in the back corner of the coop when I let the girls out. I'm assuming she passed yesterday after laying it. Her bottom was very bloody but didn't appear to be prolapsed.

This afternoon I found this egg and am freaking....I don't want to loose another! What could be causing this.....I found another bloody, brown egg yesterday and am wondering if the same hen laid this one. I checked everyone's bottoms and everyone looks fine....

Gotweim, finding blood on the surface of an egg is a common occurance and isn't really anything to be overly concerned about.

Thanks! I guess I'm just a little on edge...they do say deaths come in 3, hope that isn't true for chickens too!

An a up side, I did order some new day-olds today! They should be hatching & shipping around the 22nd!

We ordered 1 Blue Silkie, 1 White Silkie, 1 Barred Rock, and 2 Silver Cuckoo Marans, Very excited for the Silkies! I've wanted one for a while now!

Gotweim - Where you have livestock, you have dead stock. Unless they start dropping like flies I wouldn't worry.

Yup. Every now and again you lose some. I've had bloody eggs like that, too. Seems like late winter, early spring I loose one or two layers due to unforeseen reasons.

My fiancee(nitefyre) posted this int the other Michigan thread so I thought I'd pass it along here as well, and we both are addicted to the incubator, so its not so POOR phil......

Hi
Just thought I'd add to the list- I'm Leslie, fiance to "uncle Bubba", L.V.T at MSU, I live in Fowlerville just on the edge of webberville. AND I'm addicted to hatching, POOR Phil has no eggs to sell cuz I keep stuffing them in the Incubator,

I'm crossing Black Giants with Blue, black, splash and buff Orpingtons and getting some really wild color variations. We will be selling at the swap meet in williamston on March 27, and will have birds from 16 weeks on down to a few days depending on the weather. (and if my girls keep laying a few eggs here and there) I hope to have pics soon. If anybody is curious about these birds now Email me at [email protected]. And if anyone knows of a hatchaholics group please let me know:D

The swap meet is at Geyer Farm Service on 3040 Dietz Road in Williamston Michigan, just off Grand River, Just look for a green Ford Ranger, that will be us unless one of us gets a new truck before then. I may have some awesome grow out/brooder boxes fro sale if I can get them in time, I'll have some Pictures of them to post soon.

Some of my hens have decided that eggs are a delicacy.

I thought I had an egg eater, which I confirmed the other day when I tossed a couple frozen eggs to the hogs (the ones that had cracked) and one of the Brahmas that is always hanging out in the pen attacked them quicker than the pigs could and devoured them like she hadn't eaten in days. I grabbed her up then and was going to deal with her after I finished chores. I put her in a crate on the back deck and forgot about it until it got dark. Because I wasn't up for processing a chicken in the dark and cold she got a pass, a second chance. Which she seemed to be using wisely until tonight when my daughter and I went into the coop with a flashlight to put the ducks in their boxes for their trip to their new home first thing tomorrow morning. The light flashed across some eggs that were in the nest, she caught glimpse and attacked them again like she hadn't eaten in days -- which I know isn't the case, she's a hefty girl. Unfortunately every single one of the few Brahma hens I have did the same thing. There were 7 eggs in that nest when I went in the coop. In a matter of seconds, the time it took me to pounce on them and pull them back, there were only 3 left.
