Morning all! I know it is cold and snowy, but I will take this cold (19 degree's) to the sub zero weather we were having!! Besides, the ground hog comes out in a few days and the little bugger better not see his shadow, that's all I got to say!!

If he knows what is good for him, he will stay put, or he may become roast hog!!

Okay, fellow Michiganders. So, one of my roos has a frostbitten comb and wattles. MY FAULT, as I was so wrapped up in a sick one I had, I completely forgot to coat his comb/wattles with Vaseline when we had that one week of super cold weather. I feel so badly for him, and I feel like SUCH a bad chicken momma!

Anyway, I've been searching for posts on prevention, just to see if there was anything I was missing. Someone stated about putting vaseline on combs/wattles to prevent frostbite, and someone replied (who is a huge proponent of dubbing, which I am NOT): "You could rub vasaline on their head until your OWN head gets slick and it doesn't keep fowls combs and wattles from freezing in 32 degrees and below."

So - I thought it would be a good idea for me to ask the folks right in my home state what they do, and if it's been effective. I know Opa uses vaseline, so hoping he'll comment - and as many other folks as possible!! Do you use vaseline and, if so, has it worked for you? If so, how often do you apply? How thick? THANKS! I really don't want to lose another comb or wattle!!

I've been using Udder Balm on my rooster. I try to do it every other day. I apply a rather heavy coat on his comb, wattles and earlobes. I then spend several minutes massaging it in. I've read that the massaging stimulates blood flow and that is also helpful in prevention. Catching him is always a treat but once I have picked him up he settles right down. I think that he is starting to enjoy it.

Is Udder Balm like Bag Balm (petroleum based, like vaseline)? I've been using Bag Balm on this one so his frostbite doens't go any further, and I've also been doing it every other day, but a fine film. I'll start swabbing it on heavier. I do it at night, when he's already on the roost; easier to grab him up, but man, is he a CHUNK! I have a hard time holding him under one arm, and I ain't no tiny little woman, as you know! So Sam, no frostbite on your boy yet?

No, Udder Balm is based on mineral oil and lanolin. It seems to absorb into the skin and add a protective coating at the same time. It does also seem to repel water. I use it on my own face if I'm going to be outdoors for very long and the difference in how my skin feels is quite obvious.

Hey, that would be me! I'll be heading to Miss_Jaynes in the morning with the kids. Can't wait to meet some other BYC'ers and get a few more girls.

Did you say snacks?????? I've seen what you can do, and think we're in for a treat.

Yep...I'm there! But then again, if I'm not at my own home, I'm at my 2nd home......MISS_JAYNE'S!
