Vicki, we've never met, but from a fellow BYC Michigander, you are in my thoughts and prayers. It's never easy to part with animals you have raised and love. Hopefully I will met you one day at Chickenstock.

So I'm not very happy today. Thursday we were gone almost all day at a friend's taking care of her kids because her infant was rushed to the hospital. I told my daughter that if she turned on the pellet stove that night to close the bedroom door or the incubator temp would go sky high. She didn't. When I came home the temp was 105!! I'll be SO glad when we won't have to use the darn pellet stove anymore, but the nights are still cold and we live in a 60 year old all block house so it gets very cold in here even when the outside is very warm! So, now I am down to 7 eggs in that incubator, all are ones I estimate shouldn't hatch til the 1st or 2nd. Today I put in 8 duck eggs in the other incubator. I am determined to get this incubating thing right at least once. It's hard to believe I hatched out over 600 reptiles in a few years and I messed this up. But this time I put the other incubator on the porch where the temps pretty much always stay the same.

I do have a question though. Do bantams have a shorter incubation period? I see what appears to be a pip on the end of one of them and today would be day 14.

Hope this rain stops soon or I'll have to build an ark. Here are a couple of pics from inside the chicken run today looking out into my woods.

So... a co-worker of my mom's was feeding a chicken that kept coming onto her property up in St. Clair County over the weekend. She came down to work in Mount Clemens this morning and from somewhere in the outside of her truck, the chicken popped out and started running around the parking lot. So, my mom and a few other people chased it down, and got it into a box, and now I have a friend for my other 5 hens to beat up on. Hopefully that whole abuse process doesn't take too long, and they figure out their pecking order. I know there is a thread especially for naming breeds, but do any of my fellow Michiganders know what I've got here? And does anyone have any suggestions for keeping the other 6 from killing the new girl?

Here's a picture of the other girls too:

-Not that it makes a big difference, but I edited this. I only had 5 other hens to beat up on the new one. Not 6. lol

Vicki, I don't know your reasons but I feel for you. I am new here but I am sure that all of the posters here feel the same. Good luck and keep your spirits up and we will all be of help ifwe can.
