I would say SURE!! but we recently adopted (for free) 4 laying hens bringing up my backyard flock total to 14. I was thinking about selling a couple of my young ones to give me an excuse to hatch some eggs. My husband looked at me like I was rediculous.

I am going to have the same problem. I have 12 laying hens, 6 pullets and 3 more undetermined chicks. I just bought an incubator and am dying to start it up and try it out. I still don't know what I will do with all these chickens! My husband is going to kill me. I can't keep them because my hen house is not big enough nor is my run

I don't want to part with my laying hens yet though. Such dilemnas, huh?

Question for the forum:

I've been using pine shavings for my coop (I like the way it smells) but the girls are really good a soiling it quickly and covering that nice pine smell. I came across a forum that talked about using sand and using a slatted scoop to remove poo similiar to cat litter.

Anyone had experience with sand? Thoughts?

I do not like sand, it gets wet underneath and smells even worse. So far I have been using a pine shaving and chopped straw combo,21 chickens I do a total clean out once a month, I also put DE down UNDER the new shavings. So far so good.
Other people use different things and are probably just as happy with it.

I figured out early that I am seriously allergic to straw. I come within 5ft of the stuff and I am sneezing like no tomorrow. LOL

What is DE?

DH stopped by an Amish sawmill today and was asking about getting some sawdust, shavings. They sell it pretty cheep. Thought we might give it a try. I still have a half a bag of DE to mix in with it.

That's funny, I didn't answer right away because I was afraid I would butcher the spelling really bad and didn't take the time to look it up. Ha!
