That's so sad! I was spraying everyone down quite a bit today. The ducks had a blast but the chickens were just downright angry! I have 11 gatorade bottles full of water in the freezer right now so the gang will have something to lay against and my fruit and veggie popsicles ready to go. The ducks love those!

I'm a little worried about one of my cayugas though. Everyone was fine til bedtime. My daughter came running in saying one of the girls was laying down and unable to stand. So I went out there and she'd try to stand but couldn't. Her head is up, she'll eat and quack like normal and she was fine when I put her in the pond. It appears something is wrong with her foot because it's bent backwards as if she can't straighten it out

I know the farm boys have been tag teaming her a lot lately so I'm hoping she just stressed the foot somehow. I have her in the extra large dog kennel and I'll check her again in the morning. OMG I'd hate to have to cull her!

Another good day, 32 out and 32 in. From the first time I let them out to free range my chickens discovered the dark cool area under my large deck. They spend most of the day either under the trees in the back yard or under the deck keeping cool. Actually inside the coop is not really that hot I guess due to the insulation and that part of it is under trees. I have two fans running all night keeping the cool air moving and also helps keep the mosquitoes off them. I just make sure I have lots of cool fresh water out for them. Sure would be nice to have some kind of fountain running all the time for them to drink from though.

I got half the front lawn mown yesterday and the other half plus the back yard done today. Looks like tomorrow may be even hotter and muggier than today so I'm glad I got it done. While I was out mowing my Chinese Crested who is obsessed with the French Black Copper Marans babies was following them around and keeping an eye on them. At one point I stopped mowing to get a drink and check on Sachi and the chickens. Didn't see them outside or in the woods and they don't go under the deck because the older flock is under there. I finally decided to check inside the coop and when I opened the door this is what I saw!

I hope she is okay.

It may not be related at all, but I want to throw it out there, just in case. One of my scovy girls couldnt walk and I put her in the bath tub. I cant recall when this was- I believe I posted on here, but it may have been on the duck thread.
Well, I let her float around in the tub, because I didnt know what to do with her. She laid an egg in the tub, but was then able to limp around for a few days- then was fine as if nothing ever happened.

Turned out to be egg bound. I thought her leg/pelvis was broken. Didnt make sense to me that she couldnt walk, being egg bound. Seems like they could still walk if that was the case. And they have plenty of oyster shell/ etc available, but she must not have helped herself to any. I havent had the problem again, so ?????
Anyhow, just wanted to put that out there.

RIRJEN-
Im so sorry for your bunnies.

I dont miss having to try and cool off rabbits in the summer. I had an insane moment three days ago, at the pet store, where I was tempted to buy a bunny. SOOOO fuzzy it looked like an angora- and then I finally reminded myself that it was a bunch of work that I dont want to commit to...and then yesterday I said to myself, "whew I am so glad I dont have to worry about keeping that bunny cooled off today"....
Perhaps you can put central air in your new rabbit mansion?

I hope your sinuses clear soon. Sinus headaches are the worst!

Oh I need some advice this morning.

I have six baby mallards that someone surrendered at my work. Found them in a parking lot. There were nine, I have lost three. New babies are rough.

These six are doing fine- they are only a few days old. I have them in a brooder in my kitchen.
They have their heat lamp on. I do not have air conditioning. Last night when I came home from work, my house was eighty degrees...in the cool parts. Everyone was camped out in front of a fan.

Today is supposed to be even hotter...do I leave on the heat lamp? Yesterday, the ducklings were as far away from the lamp as they could get in their brooder.

Seventy seven degrees. Entirely too high a number to start the morning with. The forecast is for 95 with a heat index of over 100 so be careful to not over exert. Heat exhaustion can sneak up on you before you know it. I'm going to go out in a few minutes and water the garden and see if I can set up a water curtain to make it a little easier for the birds.

The heat record in Traverse city (1968) was broke yesterday. It is crazy hot. The new Mantis arrived but will sit in my garage until tomorrow when we get the cooler air. I waited 21 years I can wait a few days more!

RIR....that is so sad. I'm sorry

Chickmate I busted up laughing when I saw that photo! How funny!
I don't know the weather forecast for you downstaters but here they say we MAY see hail and tornadoes after 8pm. Batten down the hatches and the coops!
