I think OPA the rooster would look cute in a little cowboy hat and 6-gun

Has it crowed? Growing any spurs? Didnt crow here, no spurs.
Yay me...I am glad you have him.

I have been telling the Showgirl that it MUST be a girl. A girl named Shmoo. Must must must. I hope it listens. And you were right- its not white. Its like a sandy color..sort of. Like a sandy splash. Very cool.

I THINK one of the turkens that I got from Farmerboy wasnt listening when he said its a girl. Either that, or it is racing its sister to grow its comb bigger than hers..

The little serama/silkie chick from Keyt thinks its a helicopter.

fun fun fun.

How's that? They're so funny when they're that young!

flaps her wings like crazy and tries to go somewhere- anywhere -but only goes straight up about an inch or two, then straight back down.

So glad its Thursday..... Got woke up at 2 in the morning by some horrific screaming/screeching sound RIGHT outside our bedroom window last night. My husband and I and even the dogs were creeped out. My husband asked if that is what a chicken being killed sounds like and I told him no. ( our neighbors have chickens too). He then got up and went to check on the ducks, they were just fine in their pen and our chickens are still safe and sound in our basement. SO not really sure what it was. The worst part was that we could hear somthing moving around out there too. When my DH went to the window the noise and the movement stopped and we didn't hear it the rest of the night ( thankfully). I think it may have been a Screech owl, but my husbands boss said that rabbits make a pretty awful noise when they are attacked too. There was no evidence on the ground this morning, but what a way to be woken up.

I didn't sleep the rest of the night because every little thing I heard had me freaked out after that. So my eyes hurt and I just want to go back to bed lol, but of course I am sitting at work

This is actually a great idea, ChicwannaB! We can certainly hope that the name inspires Opa Rooster to be the "nicest rooster you will meet all day."

I love it.

aww c'mon ladies, I can't believe anyone else hasn't done it. You're all just too "chicken" to fess up. Opa is a great guy and everyone loves him.

If I ever have the opportunity to have a rooster or two, I would probably come up with some crazy name(s)....thereby sealing my fate of having a crazy rooster(s). I think your naming logic is sound. I like that you named him OPA. He will probably be a very nice, kind, and helpful rooster.

I DO hope he's the only one I have, cuz Im pushing my luck with DH in wanting to keep him, just to make a few more beautiful Buff Chante's, but I'll likely end up with lots of mutts too because he may have 10 ladies to keep happy around here. Praying the other 4 are hens. But there is ONE who also has a thick wide comb on top of it's head. I will only know it's a rooster if there comes crowing in different areas of the yard I guess, or when the one crows and I know Opa is not standing there, ya know?? I guess I could call him Opie so as not to confuse him with the real Opa.

Well, off to make a dish to pass for my weight-loss victory dinner tonight, then we are off for 6 weeks for summer before resuming again in Sept. I hope my loss is 7 pounds or greater.

but my husbands boss said that rabbits make a pretty awful noise when they are attacked too.

Yep, rabbits scream, but to freak you out further so do wild cats. Bobcats have a blood curdling scream that sounds eerily like a woman. And they do it without being attacked.

I would be interested in hearing how everyone's gardens are growing. Mine has just started really taking off, it's pretty late compared to other years.

Sounds about right. Everything is 2-4 weeks behind on average this year. It was a very abnormal spring. Even though we didn't necessarily have a lot of late frosts, the unseasonably cold and wet weather postponed planting of most crops and stunted others. This goes for everyone from backyard gardeners to major, well-seasoned farmers. The nice thing is most stuff seems to be "catching up" as well as possible so, barring unforeseen disaster, it should still be an okay harvest year.

We started eating fresh the end of may. Rhubarb, radishes, green onions and lettuce first and then strawberries and peas came ripe. Beets and carrots followed not too long after, and then the swiss chard and in the past couple weeks the green beans came into production. Ripe here right now are peas, green beans, swiss chard, third succession of radishes, lettuce, carrots, and beets. Spring peas are wrapping up. I'll pull one bed out today and rework for fall planting, another bed will be ready to be pulled by next week. The rest of the beets will be harvested today as well and those beds reworked for fall planting, too. Most of the spring lettuce has bolted, but some is still growing well. I suspect this next week in the 90s will be the end of that. Cukes, Zukes, Summer squashes, tomatoes and peppers are all working on their fruits now and will start coming ripe soon. Cauliflower heads are growing nicely and I'll start tying off cabbages next week, probably. Onions are heading up nicely enough considering the neglect that particular garden has suffered this year. And the leeks are looking good over there too. The row of winter squashes and pumpkins look nice as do the melons. I expect they'll start setting fruit soon.

The fall crop of potatoes are curing on the deck as I type and will go in later today if I can manage it and then the rest of the fall planting will begin as well. Let see if I can manage to remember what all we're putting in for fall... broccoli, turnips, spinach, more beets and cabbage, more peas, more lettuce, another succession of carrots, more radishes, those potatoes I mentioned... that's all my brain will give me at the moment. I'm now drawing a blank.
