Hey man, from time to time I dream about Sean Connery, doesn't mean i've had him either.

Maybe it was the long island ice teas I had last night, I did lose track around glass 3 of how many I had made...., maybe next time the dream can be about eggs and Sean Connery, NOW that would be interesting.. hmmmm

How did you take care of those maggots? I have had friends remove them with tweezers and I have had friends use a solution to rinse the area and the maggots fall out. They got that solution from a vet.

It is important to keep the chickens free from poop. Flies get in the poop and lay maggot eggs which then hatch and the maggots feed on the poop and then feed on the live bird.
Any wound or poopy spot on a bird is a fly magnet........

We have taken birds to the laundry room and done a little 'butt wash' to make sure this doesn't happen. Would be good for us to hear how you helped your bird.

Grandma: I'm not sure how the maggots started. I've never seen her with any poop on her, or anyone else around here. She does have a lot of trouble with laying rubber eggs, regardless of the oyster shell we feed her. She had a lot of what looked like egg material seeping out of her vent, so I am guessing she had an egg crack inside. Either way, she was in distress, it was 90 degrees outside, and we're leaving for vacation Thursday. Her comb was almost white, and she gurgled when she breathed. We did what we thought was the humane thing, and put her down. Two days prior, she was up and running around. I think the combination of the excessive heat, and whatever ailment befell her, caused the problem to worsen quickly. On a different day, in different weather, I would probably have given her castor oil, a bath, and a crate to lay in. Hopefully I never see something like that again, though. It's haunting me.

A friend of mine had me incubate some of her chicken eggs and they hatched almost a week ago. One of them was born with splayed legs. Before I had the chance to get to it, 2 days later one leg was all purple and very swollen. It was literally twice the size of the other! I knew what had to be done but Melissa was in the hospital and I wasn't going to bother her with it. When she asked me to incubate the eggs, she told me I could have 1-2 pullets of my choice so I made that one my choice. Sad thing is, I would have picked that one anyway because it was beautiful! Why does it seem the ones I really like die? UGH!

What makes you think I'M hatching eggs? LOL I actually loaned out my bator to Courtney and now that I've decided to stop 2 of my silkie hens have taken over the job. Been sitting strong since 07/19....so probably won't see any chicks until at least the 9th.

I know this is the wrong area but I thought I would pop a note here also. Does anyone in our area (or within say a 30 mile distance) offer horseback riding lessons? I have a young daughter who has taken lessons once before and has been asking mom - rather begging mom - to take lessons again. I'm having a hard time finding somewhere around our area. You'd think living in "farmville" it wouldn't be so difficult

She loved the lessons and REALLY wants a horse but since mom/dad both have to work we don't have the time to care for one properly.

If anyone knows of anyone we would be really appreciative if you would pm us and pass on the info...
