Hi, Today my baby puppy girl Jasmine passed away on her bed in my livingroom. My wife and I are pretty torn up. It was very unexpected as she was only sick for a few days and went downhill quick. She was 8 years old and so much a family member that even I cried ( and still am) - I don't usually cry but she was very special and cannot be replaced. I only bring this up because I know you all are animal people in one way or another. Try to take them into your heart everyday and remember how short their time is. I'm so sad. She will be missed more than anyone knows.

Well the girls have started to lay, at least one. Ive gotten two small pullet eggs and tonight at lock up I found a rubber egg under the roost, they have free choice oyster shell, I also feed them crushed egg shells back to them. The rubber egg was under my EE, hmm little worried about the rubber one, but I have read that happens sometimes when they first get started. I'll keep my eye on her tomorrow, shes low on the pecking pole . I saw her sitting in the nest box today but the RIR's kept kicking her out.

I hate bug zappers. They kill more beneficial insects than the pests that bother you.

Trust me...there is enough to go around. My bug zapper is really for the girls. I doubt it will put a dent in what bothers me. Plus, since I cant let my girls forage my property for bugs I figured I'd bring the bugs to them.

I live near a lake, swamp and open fields....I'd have to take much more drastic measures if I were to really tackle our bug issue.

Sorry to hear about your Jasmine. I know what thats like. I had one pass on me back in March. I put him in the back yard with a neighbor chicken. Now he's chasing chickens in Dog heaven. I miss him too. He was only 7. He was the best dog I ever had.

I bought some "calm Coat" from manna pro, its organic bug be gone for my goats, but it works fantastic on people too. not even kidding and it smells fantastic. I think I paid 9$ for a big ole bottle of it. cant beat that!!

WELCOME!!! I know hillbillyhen has some covered runs, she would be a good person to ask. She has some nice coops set up and some even more gorgeous chickaroos running around. We dont have a covered part, I was hoping to use it as part of my winter exercise and shovel shovel shovel...plus I have three goats who roam around in the same yard as my chickens so they help tromp things down pretty good.

I have a greenhouse that I use! I got it at home depot and they should be on sale now! It is vinyl and I hang a heat lamp from the top of it. The snow melts and the hens enjoy the grass and dirt in the dead of winter! It is about 8X10 ft

huh, I'll have to check that out. I actually didn't get bit up this badly at my house. This happened during my blueberry picking bananzaa...and yes I was wearing bug spray AND had one of those OFF fans on my hip. Yet still...they couldn't resist me. Who gets bit on their ear???.....I mean seriously. :: scratches ::

LOL
