My tomatoes were kind of a flop this year - my neighbor has a quickly growing huge pine that is on the property line next to my garden - I think they were a little too shaded to be as productive as usual. bummer, I was really looking forward to canning a ton. Instead I've been canning peaches like crazy, Mmmmmm.

I have a girlfriend who has that...she has to stay CLEAR of the chicken coop. She called it something else but told me it was from when she use to have chickens and cleaned the coop....the dust does it.
That is going to be really hard on your son. I am sorry he has had this happen but I know you are thankful it wasn't even more serious. Hugs to your son...

Makes me wonder if we should be wearing masks when we clean the coops?

Chickwannb...good job! (Your kitchen looks lovely)

I use a cheap dust mask when I clean up the coop. It's just so much dust and DE flying around I feel like I probably shouldn't be breathing that stuff in.

My tomatoes were just OK. I was growing tomatillos (green tomatoes with the paper on the outside for salsa verde) and it really got attacked by the hornworms. I only had one plant and i don't think I will get any tomatoes from it this year. Next year I will plant more tomatos. I have one plant that is HUGE and about to bend the cage over because it's full of tomatoes.

...not one of them is turning.

My tomatoes did terrible. Alot of people I know, thier's did too. The only ones that did wonderful were my cherry tomatoes. Which, my youngest and the chickens just love. Especially my Brahma. My husband canned last year, and I guess he won't be this year.

This was my best tomato year ever. Go figure. Chickens broke through security around the salsa garden just when they were getting ripe, but we reinforced it and have had no problems since. I made a pasta dish last night with fresh tomatoes, garlic and fresh basil and it was fabulous.

Free Blue Runner Drake to a good home. Shipped in May from Holderread Top Show Quality pairing. I cannot judge if this bird is show quality. Very upright bird. I'm in Macomb. No shipping, but I might drive some depending on distance. I'll also be posting this on the sale thread, just thought I'd have better chance of someone local seeing it here.

I'd buy them... BUT, I would have to build another coop on the back of the property... away from the coop I just built... Ok, so I am planning that for next year anyway. I want to get a shipment of meat birds to raise, and will need to put a coop back there for them...

Does any one know a cheap tree removal service here in Ottawa county? I really would like a few trees taken out of my yard. I lose sunlight so fast that things that should still be producing have already quit... I am down to only 4 hours morning sun in the front yard, but know I could still have more sun in the back...

We've got lovely 69 degree weather here in Holland this morning. Ok, not so lovely, looks like its going to rain, and SOO, that means no painting today. I guess though that I could draw in my mural lines.

I am sorry to hear about the chicken dust disease. Is there anything that he'd be able to take, supplements(?) that would allow him to go back to handling the chickens? I didn't know there was such a problem. My son, he's prone to RSV problems even now that he's 5, I think I will have to tell him to say out of the coop just to be on the safe side. He can still pick up him chickens, but no more coop messing with for him.

Does anyone else have a headache that just won't quit?

I have literally saved a couple of my hens by putting watermelon wedges in front of them. That is something all of my hens have eaten when ill. I would separate her from the others for sure in case she has something contagious and for her safety.

With the heat the last few days, I put pedialyte, plain, in just one waterer. I have 3 thru out the yard. Some people think I am nuts for having so many watering stations, but, I think its necessary. Or maybe I just spoil them... Watermelon is great too. My girls cleaned the watermelon I put out for them every day for the last few days like it was chicken food from the gods. Try strawberry yogurt, or blueberry. My girls don't like the plain, but will attack those flavors...
