You are wearing me out with all the bean picking. Whew! I need a nap....you just exhausted me reading about it. I hate picking beans!

Im preparing to do a pressure canner full of green beans tonight...just wanted to ask if anybody knows how many qt of green beans you should get in a bushel, or even a 1/2 bushel???

Ive got half of them trimmed and washed and ready for the canner now, just waiting on water to boil so I can fill the jars, got 7 qts in the canner. I do 25 minutes at 10# pressure. Meijer didn't have any lids!!!! Luckily I had enough laying around from last years projects to do this batch

Not sure how what I picked compares to a bushel but five 4 1/2 gallons picked reduced down to 9 gallons of snapped beans which filled 38 quarts.

Since my pressure cooker will only process 7 quarts at a time I drove to David's house and got his pressure cooker to speed up the process. I have an American brand pressure cooker which I feel is the best on the market. I would love to have their largest model but the $450 price tag makes me willing to continue using the one I have. The pressure cooker David has I bought in 1970. When his mother and I divorced of course she kept it but I'll bet she only used it once or twice until she gave it to David last year. I bought the one I now have in 1979 and mine has definitely been used alot.

Monday is supposed to be in the 60's so I guess I'll picked and process the horticulture beans. They have to be shelled so it looks like another exciting holiday is on tap.

Well....speaking of exciting holidays.....my hubby and I are leaving Tues. Sept. 6 to fly out to Denver, Colorado. We are meeting with Florida friends and traveling through Colorado, Montana and Wyoming in a rented minivan. My sister lives in south Colorado and a cousin of DH lives in Montana. We will be seeing a mountain man museum somewhere near Cody (my husband has yearned to see this for years) and we will go to Yellowstone where we will try our best not to run into a grizzly. We are pretty darned excited. The great thing is that we have my high school P.E. teacher and her husband (my high school Chemistry teacher) house and pet sitting for us! The P.E. teacher was my neighbor in Vermontville and their family is like part of my family so we completely trust them to care for our dog and chickens...which means we can relax and enjoy ourselves!! Life is good! Two and 1/2 weeks!

Looks like a BUSHEL is 32 quarts, so Im interested to see how I fare when I get done canning, I bought 1/2 bushel today, should give me 16 quarts, right??

One batch is out of the canner now and the rest of the beans are ready to start the second one, gotta go see what I have left for jars and lids...nite all.
I might pop on later.

1muttsfan,
if you are downriver, stop by Block's and stock up on produce. They have all kinds of good stuff for canning.
Then you can join the fun.
