RIRJen-

*where is the covering eyes singing lalalalalala smiley?*

I could be persuaded if anyone had any day-or-two old chicks that I could stick under my broodies to get them off their nest....somewhere between here and Holt which is a cruise.....

Mr O-Shamo would probably like some girlfriends- did you give him any? I was thinking you could make some freakishly tall showgirls...heck, that would probably start a big craze..or some super silkies..hahaha...

SAM- if I knew what time the raccoons came, I would park my husband out on the deck for some target practice.

Jen, we used to live in Hawaii and there were many many roosters with leg fasteners. They usually stood on top of their igloos and crowed! It seemed fine to me and I am sensitive to animals if they are stressed. There are many more predators in Michigan however and more extreme temperatures so that would be my concern here.

ALL DONE canning beans. I ended up with 11 and 1/2 qts fr om the canner and 1 qt that had to go in the freezer, so 12.5 which I bought at $12.50, I paid $1.00/qt of green beans.
One of my jars broke so I tossed it, could only get 9 pints in the last batch, had to blanch and freeze the last one.
Earlier in the week I stopped at the same farm market and was sold 4 qts of beans I paid $2/qt for. I'll buy em by the 1/2 bushel now when ever I can.

Nice work on the green beans chicwannaB, I did tomatoes today. I ended up with 35 pints of diced tomatoes. Hopefully I can get to the salsa tomorrow.

On a more serious note, my son was having trouble breathing on Thursday so we had an unplanned visit to the Dr. He had bloodwork, x ray and 4 medications. The doctor called today to tell us it appears to be Bird Fanciers Disease. My son is no longer allowed near the chickens and is pretty upset by it. I'm not sure what that means long term, what I read did not sound promising. I'm not sure what to think at this point. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the week spent at the fair. I do the coop cleaning here at home, at the fair he was responsible for it, and it was dusty.

Green Beans are in my dreams, I need another canner full of pints to cover the year.

Sorry to hear about the boy with the chicken dust disease. My neighbor is a nurse and he made it very clear when we started this whole chicken thing years ago that under no certain terms should I let my DD clean coops. I needed proper face mask and ventillation. I guess I had always thought it took years of exposure to have a problem but I guess that was a mistake. Hope you get some answers.

The broody bug has also hit our barn yard. There is a little serama setting faithfully every day even though I keep taking her egg and leaving the door of the coop open. She is so cute.

I have a girlfriend who has that...she has to stay CLEAR of the chicken coop. She called it something else but told me it was from when she use to have chickens and cleaned the coop....the dust does it.
That is going to be really hard on your son. I am sorry he has had this happen but I know you are thankful it wasn't even more serious. Hugs to your son...

Makes me wonder if we should be wearing masks when we clean the coops?

Chickwannb...good job! (Your kitchen looks lovely)

The morning is starting out a little on the damp side and ten degrees cooler than this time yesterday. Looks like its going to be a good morning to set, drink coffee, and read.

Yesterday was out day! I lost a huge Cherry in the backyard during the worst storm I think we've ever had. OPA, I see you had H.Beans, I too grow them and harvested about 1st week of August. We put up a mess. Planted a second crop which is getting close to putting out beans. Do you can or freeze yours?

Once I have the horticulture beans shelled I will be canning a good percentage of them, and some I intend to vacuum seal and freeze.

Good Mornning!

The coop remodel is just about finished! It looks soo cool. It still needs a coat (or 4) of paint on the outside but I plan to do that when the weather is cooler. I had to paint a house in Puerto Rico for a friend's parents in 95-100 degree weather and it was NOT fun. I'll post pictures one I clean up the poopy boards and such. The girls are a bit confused over the added space but the babies love their little private area.

One of our BR's was still a little lathargic last night so I've separted her from the flock. Her comb is still a little flopped over and she's drinking but not really eating. I added nutri-drench to her water and her poo is normal looking. So I guess we just wait. I think she got overheated and maybe doesn't feel well. Hopefully she starts eating soon. Any suggestions on what to do would be awesome. I threw some yogurt and crumble mix in front of her and she's curious but doesn't go for it.
