I'm here, just trying to catch up. I have been really tired lately and this thread moves so fast it's almost impossible to catch up. I need to make a list of those wanting the Icelandics since i have had a few folks asking for those. I plan on seperating them into their own pen in February.

Welcome to all the new folks

Have you had your thyroid checked?? I went thru a time when I was so tired it was a chore to do anything. Had a tumor on my thyroid. Hope you feel better.

Thanks chickflick. I did have my thyroid checked in the spring. I have it checked every year since I have several family members with thyroid problems. It checked out fine. My MG [myasthenia gravis] symptoms have been kicking in quite a bit so I am pretty sure it is just that. Just need to rest but there is too much to do and not enough summer to do it.

I know how you feel. We definately need more summer and less winter. Winter seems to be coming up on us pretty fast this year. But... sometimes I look forward to the break.

If only winter were 3 months and spring, summer and fall lasted loner. Take care of yourself! Take breaks and rest.

The work will be waiting for you when ever you are ready to get back to it.

Huston's Happy Hens :

Hi Nancy and Steve!!!
This year I have a hen who got infested with mites. I started to notice that when she got up she was real slow. On inspection she was loaded with the little devils! I usually have a hidden population of mites on someone since I have wild birds come in and out of their run. But I have never seen hundreds on one hen. She got a bath to kill the first batch and another a week later. Also has egg masses on her belly. Used poultry drench to help get her strengh back and she is slowly coming anound. Inspected the rest of the flock and two other hens had some mites but no one else.
Leg issues in my hens can also mean that they have something wrong in their belly, such as developing into an internal layer. I have also had problems with Maraks one year that showed up as lameness.
Also check feet for splinters !!

Thanks Kristen - later that night we took her out of the cage and extended the egg - she whipped her head around like it hurt - put her back in her cage, she jumped out before we could even get it closed! and ran around the garage like nothin had happened! kept her there till sun afternoon and gave her a little exercise in the garage and sure enough she seemed fine....had laid an egg and tossed it in her water dish....she's back out with her buddies now and feelin fine! whew! so are these mites large enough to see?? - miss seeing you two!

HaHA Just cramps!!
Course you can see them mites. Its just a matter of knowing were to look

Lots of nice and informative folks on this thread. I don't know anyone near Monroe. I got my silkies from a breeder up in Grant, MI but I think that may be a bit of a drive. Someone will pipe in and let you know.

There are silkie chicks and eggs available in the auctions section of this site as well. I haven't bought anything from the auctions....yet.
